The Official Parenting Thread

reasons my 17 year old got mad this weekend

1) we didn't have heavy cream at 9:30 PM last night
2) she opened the fridge and some shit that she had put in there previously fell out. kid let out an agonized scream like she came home and found us all dead... that was just the ignition. what really set her off was her 15 year old sister went to check on the noise & make sure the 17 year old was OK but then didn't clean up the mess. "WHAT YOU'RE JUST GOING TO FREAKING STAND THERE AND NOT CLEAN IT UP???!?!?!!!!"

lots of stomping around, heavy sighs and obvious angry disappointment that her family clearly hates her because of these two things
Kids are a lot quieter if they are locked out of the house and you turn the tv volume up.

Big Grandparenting thread energy
this reminds me of a lady i used to deliver newspapers to when i was between ages 10 - 13. she was old, old. never totally sure but if i had to put a number on it, i'd say she was in her 80s.

could tell she was home even if the door was shut because the TV was at supermax volume. in summer, when she had the door open and the screen down, you could hear it several houses away.

i'd pound on that aluminum door with everything i had and she would never come to the door. got to the point where i'd give it a couple loud bangs, and then just walk inside. she may have heard me but never acknowledged that fact. she never got upset that i just materialized in her foyer. used to think she ignored the bangs because getting up was too much energy expense and it got where she just expected people to come in if they needed something from her.

Baseball bats for elementary school kids shouldn't be $200+
I lucked out in the used market this year. I scooped an $80 retail tball bat plus a second for $35 total on FB. Got my daughter’s softball bat ($60 retail I think) for $10 at Play it Again in Feb when ours had 50% off everything.

I didn’t realize I was in the market for extra baseball bats or I would have looked for more during that sale. Our almost 2 yr old just takes the bats from his siblings, so I had to grab extras. This baby is trying to skip the tee and go straight to dad pitch.

My oldest is getting really into speed rubiks cubing.

This is the newest challenge. The first time took about 3 hours. He can now do the 5x5 cube in under 20 minutes.

Learning from YouTube because Im a dumbass who cant even do a 2x2.

Im curious to see how far he goes with this.

When I was working back at Disney Resorts back in the day the Rubix cube championships were there yearly and you should have seen some of these kids that could solve these things in seconds right in front of you. They literally carried them around all day doing that to get ready.

I literally have never been able to solve one of these things.

Talkbats....the real scam is if your kids stick with it through middle school.

Up until 12U - drop 10
13U - drop 8
14U - drop 5
High school - drop 3 BBCOR

Each one of those has models that start at hoo boy and range up to yama hama

My kid just decided to become a pitcher-only for the remainder of his high school career. he also grew quite a bit and would've surely "needed" a longer/heavier BBCOR bat this year, so I guess that's a positive.

Edited to add: around 12-13U, they'll start mixing in wood-bat tournaments too. Nothing like hearing $100-400 shatter in a kid's hand.

Also, for metal bats, also definitely register the product for the warranty - we had to replace a 12U bat that cracked...it was near the end of the season, so we got a drop 8 on the exchange.

Edited again: of course, house/community leagues and club leagues often use different certifications for bat bounciness, so if your kid does both....that's 2 bats at each weight level.
