Running

Thanks! Something for me to think about at least, and I'm definitely going to try setting my pelvis and thinking about tailbone wind as I run. Also...

(3) I'm clenching my ass cheeks like I'm trying to hold something in my asshole (but have, thus far, avoided actually loading anything in the chamber)
This step shouldn't be a problem for me, because I'm one of that lucky set of folks that "has to go" on like half of my runs at any distance over 5 miles. As I've run fewer times in a week, I definitely don't like to go any shorter than 5.5-6 when I do get out, so....each run is an adventure!

Also, is this you on your run matedog

Happened to notice this earlier when searching old posts in this thread - sounds like it still applies to matedog runs.

around Thanksgiving i got sick, then mid December a bit of a weird cold. in there had a handful of days off work, holidays, etc.

kept running but shorter distances and sometimes just twice a week but felt terrible most outings. somewhere mid-month i decided that i needed to start doing lunge stretches and maybe some body weight squats since i stopped doing them for no reason a while back.

first day doing lunges i must have sunk too low, or stretched too deeply because i felt a tug in my hip and turned in to like full leg dull ache for a month. a constant 4/10 dull groaning ache. couldn't lay on that side. walking too long or running too much made the pain sharp. sorta felt like maybe there was a bone issue happening. nothing was dulling the ache.

last week i happened to look at my Garmin and realized i had surpassed 400 miles on my shoes. usually i notice between 3 - 350 that they're wearing out and causing me problems but for whatever reason i sailed right past that and just ignored all the associated signs.

been a Brooks Adrenaline guy for 15+ years but tried on some Hoka's a couple months back, liked them, bought them and set them near my running gear but kind of forgot they were there until Sunday. so i strapped them on Tuesday thinking i needed to switch out of the old shoes anyways... and my hip couldn't hurt more so fuck it.

and, holy shit, not only are they springy and amazingly comfortable, but i ran about 1 minute/mile faster than i have in recent months on all 3 runs this week with no noticeable increase in effort and my hip/leg pain is completely gone. totally resolved.

sooo... listen to your body, i guess.

Took just over two weeks of from running or any structured exercise, from labor through bringing our son home. Got out this morning for a short run (my wife is still recovering), and it felt great. 55 degrees, not humid, sunny. Didn’t go long and stayed in the neighborhood, but it felt so good to be back on my feet.

Not having to do nearly as much concerted ass cheek clenching now. Had a rough week or so where I think I was just overworking my glutes on my runs, so I finally started doing some basic body weight strength stuff for hips and core. Man, what a noticeable difference a couple weeks into that now. Feeling sturdier and less prone to the odd ache or pain.

Currently debating whether to do the Pittsburgh half or go nuts and sign up for the full. I did a 10.5 long run a couple weeks ago and am confident I can certainly do a half in 3+ months, so I don't feel like that'll push me much. At the same time, I'm not sure if 13 weeks is enough time to build off of my ~20 mile week to think about pulling off 26.2 ha. I turn 40 two weeks before the marathon so feel like it would be an awesome thing to accomplish, but I certainly don't want to overdo it.

Maybe try the half but go for a PR? Incorporate more speedwork into the training, so instead of running longer you’re running faster?

I spend a good amount of time on my own running every week, but I can't imagine upping the mileage and time required for a full marathon. Also not sure if my body would like it.

Yeah, I figure that is the sensible in-between option. Having never run a race before, I'm not sure what mark is sensible to shoot for, but I'm sure I could probably do a 13-miler in February and figure something out.
