Running

Holabird has been good to me

just cracked a box of new shoes that i picked up for $80, which retail for $140. last year's model which is what i always buy but generally have bought from Holabird in the past for $100.

i've bought my last 4 pairs from them. good prices, quick shipping.
Seems they don’t serve the bigfoot crowd. Filters don’t have size 14 as an option, bummer.

I’ve gotten soft (figuratively and literally). My only 2 outdoor runs of 2026 were when I was in SoCal for work.

Been hitting Orangetheory pretty regularly.

New challenge tomorrow: I’m doing the Hustle up the Hancock 875 North Michigan Avenue tomorrow 94 flights. Nice knowing everyone!

Messed up my left ankle early on in January so I’ve been just doing the Peloton as it doesn’t impact/cause any sort of pain. My ankle has been feeling great the last week so hopefully I can get in a run on Sunday.

If it still hurts, I’m very glad we have the Peloton.
3 1/2 miles with lots of hills and zero pain. Hell yeah. I’ll probably run twice a week with some serious babying and keep the Peloton as my primary workout for the foreseeable future but last time I tried to run I saw stars as soon as my foot hit the pavement. Massive gain.

We walk 20-25 miles a day in Japan and I don’t want to injure myself before the trip in April, so baby steps.

Yesterday, there was a 20K race, a few towns away from me. I have run the race a couple times in past years. This year, they postponed it 4 weeks in a row due to snow and "frigid" conditions on one of the days.

Yesterday, they finally ran it. Check in was supposed to be inside an elementary school. However, due to the incoming Winter storm, the town cancelled their access inside the building...crazy. So, apparently there was a couple porta-potties set up and check-in was done in the Winter elements.

Anyways, I did not sign up, nor run the race. But, I did run 20KM yesterday morning, out of respect for their struggle, patience to finally get that race in. Certainly, I did not run a race pace or close to it...but I did get some miles in. Some of it was a bit slick...I should get a better pair of shoes for these elements.

i've found that no shoe is really great for ice/packed snow.

some people swear by Yaktrax or the equivalent but i find them to be more dangerous than just regular running shoes. something about metal hitting glare ice causes way more slipping and sliding than just regular running shoe soles.

I’ve run pretty consistently for the better part of 20 years now, but I’ve averaged 40-50 mpw, 5-6 days/wk, for the last year. It’s been great. We moved to the Pittsburgh suburbs, and the hills are absolutely insane. I grew up in NH, where we have real mountains, but there is significant elevation change every quarter mile here. It bothered me at first, but I love it now.

Kicking around the idea of training for something, since my running has purely been for pleasure. We have a 5k in my town put on by the new local running club, but I can do that weekend. Trying to decide if I find something else, risking my enjoyment and good health luck for a shock to the system and some additional strength and aerobic top end.

I only run for pleasure. I sign up for a race every quarter or so. This forces me to train differently. (Longer distance, trail run etc). But then I never actually go to the event and just run the distance or on a different trail the day of the race.

I just really like running by myself.

Last Saturday was Pi Day. I ran a 3.14 "fun run", which I finished second in. There was a kid, maybe 18 years old, that surged ahead of me, after a 1/4 mile into the run. Thankfully, I stayed ahead of about 100 other runners for the rest of the run

And last night, the hills on a casual 7 mile, post-work run, beat me up. I ended up with a pace lower than what I had hoped for, even though I was sweating more than usual.

I'm putting a decent amount of effort in. But it is difficult to adjust to, slowing down a bit.
