Running

Ran 7 miles yesterday, 8 1/2 today. Ideally, I would have liked the mileage a bit higher. But, I worked nearly 50 hours this week, on my feet, so I was already a bit tired.

And, I have been trying to run a bit faster as of late. I have not worn a watch in a few years, so I'm kinda winging it. Last Sunday, as I crossed a busy road and then turned left down the road I live on, there were 2 runners 30 yards behind me. I used that as motivation to pick up my pace. Thankfully, I was able to stay head of those guys. And I worked up one of the better sweats that I have had this Winter.

I'm doing some half hearted training for my first half marathon on 3/5 - twice a week with one short/medium run and one long run. I did a 10 miler yesterday and I'm kind of addicted to two things after my long runs - the all encompassing fatigue and the hunger attacks that hit me like 2 or 3 hours after I run. Not sure if that makes me weird, but I love that shit.

Endorphins man, good shit.

One of the other first grade parents at my children's school invited me to go for a run with him Sunday morning. I've probably ran five times between Thanksgiving 2021 and Sunday. Ran an easy 4 miles at a 9:10 pace. I used to run a lot more before having kids, and really once we had our second it really slowed down and changed to lifting weights more. I've wanted to get back to running more but as everyone knows, getting started is the hardest part. Glad this invite got me going, as I've got another run planned for this evening. Trying to make this a habit again, like I'm currently doing with weight lifting.

Weather turning and the new pup being a bit less demanding, I'm feeling like I can finally get back into the groove of targeting consistent 80/20 again. Winter has been a lot more just making sure I get out there and doing more tempo runs and zone 4+ shorter runs, in addition to trying to get into the habit of semi-regular body weight strength stuff. I feel like my cardio fitness has been fairly steady but that I've gotten stronger and sturdier out there. That has been borne out by my last few runs pushing me to personal best vo2 max. While that's just using what is probably a fairly unreliable apple fitness estimate, it's definitely good positive reinforcement to see some gains there. This is my arc since I started focusing on 80/20 in early July last year.

I did a zone 2 6 mile run on Sunday, and it was my first one where I was able to complete 6 miles without drifting over 11:00 to keep the HR low enough.

Have come a long way since my first 6+ mile zone 2 run last year:

Zone 2 for the win. I can't do it running because my body doesn't want to go slow, but why I love rowing.

I did my first half marathon yesterday. I had limited my training to twice a week (full marathon I did 3 or 4 a week). I also did piss poor prep the day before with my diet - had a lot of pizza and beer, so I was a little worried ahead of time. I also had no idea how to pace myself on a largely flat (450' elevation gain) course. My longest run in prep for this was 11 miles and I averaged 8:42 with 1100' elevation gain. I ended up running just under 1:44, averaging 8:06/mile.

Course went from downtown Livermore into the surrounding wine country. The park portion got rained out, so we stuck mostly to roads which was less than ideal. The surrounding hills had a lot of snow from the storm the night before which made for great scenery.

Mile splits:
1. 8:56
2. 8:21
3. 8:19
4. 8:13
5. 8:30 (the "hill" was in this mile)
6. 8:14
7. 7:50
8. 7:58
9. 8:12
10. 7:49
11. 7:48
12. 7:34
13. 7:20

I'm proud of my generally negative splits. I had some join pain towards the end and a nasty blister today. I also had been having achilles tendon pain on my right leg, but that didn't bother me too much. Going to take some time off to let it heal. I did well with the now necessary caveat, "for my age group."

This past several days of sunsets that are inching towards 7PM have been much appreciated by my running.

After work, there were 3 days that I made it out, 5 miles, 6 miles, 5 miles last night. It had been a while since I was able to go out without a reflecive vest and a head lamp. And damn it, it was really nice to not have to wear them. Even so, a a Toyota Prius tried to run a stop sign at a T intersection and run me over....asshat. I screamed at them, they slammed on their brakes and I continued on with my run. That's part of the reason, I don't run with ear buds playing music, I want to be in tune with my surrounding. Because even in the suburbs, there is a decent chance, a bad driver might run into you.

Anyways; I seem to be picking up my pace a bit the past couple weeks. I still have some extra belly fat since I tend to eat a more gluttonous diet in the Winter. But, I have tried to be a little more careful recently to not snack as much on cheese and crackers before dinner. As well as trying to dial back the amount of beer consumed, which we know, is not always easy.

BTW matedog , great job on running that half marathon. Those negative splits are impressive !

My goal for the year is to run at least one half marathon every quarter. I ran 11 last Sunday, but was coming up on the end of the first quarter for 2023 without hitting my goal so I got up yesterday and was out the door by 7:45am. By the time I got home I did 13.21 averaging 9:30 miles. One of these days I will finally convince myself to not run straight up Market on the way home. Damn Seattle and all these hills everywhere.

ran a 15k this morning in some wild wind and snow. course features two brutal hills. one at mile 1 and the other at mile 6. it's a tough race (for me). feels like the entire thing is uphill somehow. just a kick straight in the groin for 90 minutes.

somewhere around mile 3.5 or something the wind was blowing straight across my face. some of the lighter/smaller people were clearly struggling to run forward. the wind was trying to push people over.

there was a group of what looked like a young family cheering runners on from their driveway with a table setup, some music and drinks and a sign that just said "WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK".

pretty much summed up today.

I have been so soft on running during this extended winter hang-on period....but I've been going to Orangetheory instead.

Averaging 1 outdoor run per week (yesterday was beautiful, got in 6).

I don't know, when it's cold and windy, I hem and haw about dressing and get out running later than I want to (throwing off the schedule), or sometimes skip it and think "I'll just take the dog for extra walks" - vs. with Orangetheory, I'm just like "eh, I have to be there at X:XX time, like it or not."

I'm looking forward to improving weather and more outdoor runs though.

So much agreement with this. As a consequence, I've been succumbing to the impatience of when I do get out pushing myself much harder than the 80/20 script because I'm unsure when I'll get out next. Definitely hopeful that with the weather seemingly turning to spring that I'll find a nice steady routine again.

Also really excited to dive into the amazing weather in appreciably better shape than last spring. My 10k pace from last spring (late spring at that) was 9:48, and last weekend I was at 8:48.

Yeah, it's been a drag here this spring. Lots of low 40s and rain during the times I'd normally run. Makes it really hard to get motivated. Doesn't help that the park I run in has a lot of exposed stretches that can be pretty brutal if the wind is up. Looks like we should have some warmer temps and less rain by the end of the week. The 5k I was able to get in a couple weeks ago when it was sunny and 60 was glorious. Looking forward to more of that.
