Nomadland - 9/10
This one knocked me on my ass. What is simply a plotless road movie about an older woman (Frances McDormand) who lost everything in the great recession roving the country in her van finds profound moments of hope, loss, and healing in her search for camaraderie. Writer/director Chloe Zhao (The Rider, The Eternals) uses mostly non-actors, with the exception of McDormand and an always underrated David Strathairn, and an almost documentary style of filmmaking to observe the forgotten blue collar people that make up these nomadic communities. At times, Nomadland feels like the best work of Terrence Malick, observing the actors against these beautiful nature backgrounds with mostly natural light at different times of day. Unapologetically blue collar, taking the good and powerful insights with the self-defeatingly stubborn nature of the American worker class. McDormand is incredible; subtle yet you can feel her every emotion, observant as she internalizes the stories of the people she meets.
It's a heavy movie but also an uplifting one. Will be interesting to see if it ends up an award season player. I can't believe they gave Chloe Zhao a superhero movie.
