Let's All Go to the Movies

I'm not saying it's not a problem. I'm just saying that article was bullshit and it should have just talked about how it's all about the money.

And moving the entire 2021 slate to streaming was also about money. So what?

Yeah, I don't believe for a second that they didn't inform most everyone directly involved of this move. They may not have allowed input on it but I would bet money that they knew beforehand. Hell, even I knew this was going to happen weeks before it did. It wasn't some closely guarded secret or anything.

The fact that half of the idiots in this country cant get their shit together enough to even allow basic services much less movie theaters to reopen isn't exactly WBs fault. They were going to hemorrhage money on these releases if they didn't do something to stem the blood flow. I may not like it, but I would probably vote for that model if I were in the decision making room. It's most certainly the best move for the umbrella. WB has already been through multiple rounds of layoffs.

Yeah, I think WB is just the first major studio to come to terms with the New Math. You can't make box office money (which has already been on the decline for some time) on the interim, so you boost your stock prices with an influx of subscribers to your fledgling streaming arm. It directly fucks the projects you already have in the can but what can you do? Pandemics are rough. The indefinite nature of this gives me pause. Dune isn't scheduled to come out until October of next year. Declaring movies that far out will also be streaming instead of kicking the can down the road sort of hints that this might be the way it is even after the pandemic. There have also been fears among the theater defenders (Nolan) for years that the major studios have been waiting for such a moment to make their move against the industry. The pandemic and the fall of the Paramount decree are perfect timing for the studios to shape the future of theaters to their will.

Nomadland - 9/10

This one knocked me on my ass. What is simply a plotless road movie about an older woman (Frances McDormand) who lost everything in the great recession roving the country in her van finds profound moments of hope, loss, and healing in her search for camaraderie. Writer/director Chloe Zhao (The Rider, The Eternals) uses mostly non-actors, with the exception of McDormand and an always underrated David Strathairn, and an almost documentary style of filmmaking to observe the forgotten blue collar people that make up these nomadic communities. At times, Nomadland feels like the best work of Terrence Malick, observing the actors against these beautiful nature backgrounds with mostly natural light at different times of day. Unapologetically blue collar, taking the good and powerful insights with the self-defeatingly stubborn nature of the American worker class. McDormand is incredible; subtle yet you can feel her every emotion, observant as she internalizes the stories of the people she meets.

It's a heavy movie but also an uplifting one. Will be interesting to see if it ends up an award season player. I can't believe they gave Chloe Zhao a superhero movie.

And Promising Young Woman is still slated for a theatrical only release on Christmas Day.

WHO THE FUCK STILL HAS MOVIE THEATERS OPEN?!?!
I thought I read it was getting the shitty limited Christmas theatrical and everywhere (aka VOD) rollout in early February like they're doing with Minari but I can't find it anywhere now.

Is this VOD yet?

Film @ Lincoln Center did a virtual cinema run. They are doing Minari starting this weekend as well.
Streaming limited to certain number of people for each screening. We're in a fucking pandemic and people can't go to theaters so let's cut down on revenue even more. And if you're on the west coast you need to start watching before 6pm or you're SOL. I don't understand any of this.

That's not up to them. It's an early screening. Virtual film festivals were doing the same thing. Distributors can dictate how many screenings are allowed before official release.

Regardless of it being sold out, you have to start Minari by 5:30pm Pacific time or you're out of luck. That's gold.

Alamo Drafthouse sends me a message every other fucking day reminding me they're open.

They're only open Friday/Saturday/Sunday now. 2 out of 6 locations open.
The two AMC's across the street from each other just across the border in Schererville, IN are open. One is Fri-Sun but plans on opening 7-days on 12/18. The other is already 7 days a week. When you buy a ticket, it automatically blocks out all the seats immediately around you... not that it would convince me to go.

They're based in NYC. Lucky to be able to view it nationwide at all, IMO. Remember, these aren't the official releases for these movies. I thought it was a cool opportunity to see some buzzy titles early, before their nonsensical nationwide roll outs.

I get staggered rollout during a regular year when there isn't a virus sweeping across the country and theaters in large metro areas are shut down. These companies trying to act like "everything is normal!" with their release plans slays me.

Are you angrily agreeing with me? I just thought the article was stupid and poorly written.
Nobody is angry here dude. I sensed an apathy in your first post towards the fact this is about money. Not just directed at you but I don't understand why Nolan and Legendary's gripes about money are bad but WB's move to make as much money as possible is good. Felt similarly to fans getting mad at players during a labor despute with billionaire sports franchise owners. Hollywood Reporter does mostly suck though. Good for the quotes, not for the actual breakdown.

Your posts sound angry. =) And, no apathy about money, I just thought the article hiding behind bullshit instead of just coming out and saying it's about money was dumb. I totally agree that WB should screw off if they are trying to use this to steal money from people.

Also fuck sport team owners. Shitheads all around and if they are on one side of a dispute I'll side with the other one 95% of the time.
