With #1 we actually went out quite a bit (he was a regular at Fieldwork for a while), it was never a problem. When he was very little (which is when those things are most beneficial because they're sleeping all the time and harder to put back to sleep) we wanted to wear him while out anyway. I feel like with those stroller/carseat combos you end up with something that's worse at both things, for pretty dubious savings. But obviously ymmv.
So I guess what I'm saying is that
Jerm should look into carriers as well. We're using a Happy Baby and a Baby K'tan with success with #2 (who refuses to sleep during the day unless being worn).
Also highly recommend finding stuff for cheap/free. My wife is in a local "buy nothing" Facebook group and just from people in our (broadly defined) neighborhood plus a couple friends with slightly older kids we've gotten pretty much everything we didn't have already have left over from #1. I think the only things we've really bought are consumables and #1's new carseat.
