Well it's been an exhausting half day, as Geezer was clearly in pain and unable to use the bathroom all last night, despite trying repeatedly. He awoke to sniff food with the others but was also yowling, so off to the emergency vet we went at 3 am.

He has a bunch of crystals/stones in his bladder. Some will leave on their own and some won't, so they'll need to be surgically removed. Think of a kidney stone, but worse since it's a cat who can't exactly chug Ocean Spray.

They said he should be able to come home tomorrow and then I can hopefully get him into surgery somewhere (my vet is booked through mid-April).

Also I've just canceled my England trip next week but I'll figure that part out later. Need an August destination anyway.

Wheeeeeee

Leopold has not eaten or drank any water since this weekend. He vomited a lot on Sunday so we took him to an urgent care clinic. Subcutaneous fluids and an anti-nausea shot later, we brought him home. Still no appetite. He vomited again this morning so back to our regular vet. Little dude is now getting prepped for expiatory surgery to hopefully find (and remove) an obstruction. If they don't find anything, there's no immediate alternative to explain the lack of appetite.

Also, our vet said that there's no way he's a younger cat. When we adopted him in November, we were told he was about 2.5yrs. Looking at the condition of his teeth (ie. the overall lack of teeth), they think he's at least 10-12yrs. Not saying any of the vets who looked at him when he was surrendered to an animal shelter or went into foster were acting maliciously or anything but that really caught us off guard!

Poor guy. Hope he feels better.

One round of surgery later and... we don't have anything concrete. No foreign object stuck somewhere in his GI tract that would explain anything. The vet noted that a small part of his intestine was looking unhealthy and discolored and could suggest some mild torsion. She literally straightened him out and he's in recovery. We have to pick him up tonight but then drop him off again in the morning for additional fluids and observation. 😿

Geezer update: He is home and has eaten all the foods. Now the goal is for him to use the bathroom regularly until we can get him in for surgery Monday. So we are hoping for no blockages that would put us in the same position as before and also delay surgery (as the kidney values need to be reasonable).

His brothers are happy to see him. His sister has done nothing but hiss and growl at everyone. Typical.

Thank you Stabby . We got our old (still seems so odd that none of the other vets who saw him before we adopted him caught that he was older) home for the night. He’s very out of it, and still not showing signs of appetite. They even smeared some gunk on his ear to kickstart his appetite but nothing.

Geezing on this dreary morning. Surgery is Monday... happy Spring Break to me. 🤦🏻‍♀️

We went back for an x ray last night just to ensure everything was alright, as he's still not really peed normally (at least not to me). They said his vitals and bladder were good so hoping all stays this way through Monday.

Giving cats medicine is really stressful for both parties though. I am not great at it and he's a wriggly Geezer. Bad match.

I think (desperately hope) we’re on the right track now. He spent all day Thursday on IV fluids and was fed by the vet via syringe. As soon as we got him home last night, he made a bee line for his dry food. The vet said he could stay home today and he’s been up and walking around. And continuing to eat.

It’s been hard to get a decent picture of him showing off his recovery suit (we also have one in a fun tiger stripe).

Vet think it’s pancreatitis. How do cats get that? No idea. How do we prevent it? No clue. How do we treat it? IV fluids and anti-nausea meds. As long as he continues to eat, he should be fine. His stitches for the 8” incision on his abdomen come out in 2 weeks.

Had he not resumed eating, the next step would have been to insert a feeding tube for 2-3 weeks. Some threads on Reddit suggest those aren’t so bad to manage. I’d just as soon avoid finding out for myself, though.

I hope your dude remains in good shape for surgery on Monday Stabby !
