Real Golf

Oh I only watch him play golf I don’t listen to him speak or anything. Did not know.

It typically goes down like this. My dad, who has golf channel on almost all day every day and just generally pays way closer attention than I do, reports to me that he dislikes a player because x or y. Then I do some googling, and end up agreeing with him and also disliking the player.

I went to hang out with a buddy this weekend and played an 18-hole executive course with them. I hadn't swung a golf club in more than 20 years. Shot an 89 on a par 58.

I was mainly just focused on trying to repeat a swing and make good contact. I hit the green in one on 3 holes, but I have no idea how to putt. I hit pretty well with a 6 and 7 iron. I have no understanding of a pitching wedge, though my best shot of the day was with it where I posted up about 3 feet from the hole from about 50 yards.

When they said they wanted to go golfing, I was very hesitant and nervous. The last time I played with my boss and his father on a regular course, they made me stop playing after the first 9 and I was really fucking embarrassed, which is probably why I stopped playing (and not too long later my clubs got stolen).

But I had a fucking blast! It was super low-key, with great company on a pretty nice, albeit hot, day. My father has a set of clubs he told me I could borrow anytime, and honestly, I kind of want to just go to a range and knock some around. All my bad shots (most of my shots total) were completely expected, but when I made good contact and got nice lift on the ball, it felt great.

Anyway, carry on, just felt like sharing the experience of a no-experience golfer.

My 2.5 year old son is getting into golf, thanks to my dad. He asks to watch golf on TV and then actually pays attention for a few minutes. My parents just bought him a four club set with little golf bag, as well as some whiffle golf balls. He can practice with those balls and with real balls on the net in their backyard; they had already gotten him a putter which he used on the artificial green in their backyard. He has a pretty nice swing for a 2 year old.

I am very happy with this development because it may mean I can get back on the course in a couple years, sooner than I thought I'd be able to. Very curious to see where this goes.

Golfing at first with the kiddos is kind of stressful until you learn that most of your time will be spent helping them enjoy it, and learn the game more, along with helping to keep the pace, or be aware of their surroundings and other golfers.

But once you realize and find the new medium, it’s so much fun. My guys love playing golf, and already asked to make sure they got signed up for golf camp this summer.

………Right up until they get big and good and can outdrive you by 20 and beat you handily once in mid-season form.

Kidding for the most part, enjoy seeing him play and excel at it. Always did my best not to force it on him since a gigantic part of my family as feared he’d burn out/give no fucks.

74 today with a couple doubles. I’ll take it. Best I’ve played over course of 18 this year. Really need to get some new grips put on this weekend. Putter is rolling true.

Other than the occasional driving range sesh on vacation, I didn't play with my dad until I was 12 or 13. Always wish I'd started earlier...feel like everything would feel a little bit more natural/ingrained.

Funny enough, my dad had also stopped playing for almost 30 years. When he was a teen, he was apparently an excellent player (and teacher) and had designs of going pro. And then his eyes went bad and there was not the technology to address it back then. Now, I don't know what's a tall tale and what's true, but he insists he was planning to try to be a pro golfer until that all went down. He's pretty good now for a dude in his late 60s - usually shoots mid 70s when I play with him. Killer short game.

Yeah I don’t pressure the kiddos. Hell I sometimes tell them I don’t wanna play today and we stay home.

But they’ve been blessed with really amazing teaching pros at our club to do camps with. Their favorite left last year or so and went to the public course I started learning golf seriously at across the street from East Lake GC. This new one has some kiddos on D1 schools and has a great fun approach to golf and games for the kids.

This summer we plan to play way more, when one of my kids played from the whites at 9 years old and managed a par or bogey on a par 5 legit tee to green, I was blown away. He played further back than most folks, but we were out fucking around playing a few holes before momma got home.

Enjoy having a parent to enrich the game with him. It’ll be a nice bonding time when your are older and probably a lasting memory the 3 of you playing a round together.

As much business as our nation does with the Saudi’s I never really understood the fear of it in the golf industry.

They are already in bed with China.
I was talking more specifically about MBS hiding his behavior behind another western property. Dude already owns large stakes in lots of video game companies. Gotta diversify that blood money and look all shiny and happy.

And I am just as opposed to our government being in bed with Saudi Arabia and largely shrug emoji'ing off any human rights violations. Same thing with China.

Soccer. Saudis are throwing huge money at aging superstars and are now trying to attract younger stars as well.

They already have Ronaldo, now Benzema, trying to get Messi and N'Golo Kanye...

Don't they already own a Premier League team?

Sports-washing is a fascinating topic to me. Karim Zidan started as a lot of MMA-centric sports-washing stuff but hits a bit of everything these days.
