Fishing Thread

Took my daughter fishing for the first time and this was only my second time out after 10 years of not fishing. We went to a local park that has a small lake and just fished off the bank. After fishing in deeper water with no luck, I was able to find a small cut of shallow water and it was loaded with bluegill and small bass. The water was so clear and the sun was out so you could easily see the fish swimming around. Every time she casted, the bluegill would swarm her worm. We were still having trouble catching them because they were so small. So I found the smallest hook I had and used my pliers to bend it back more to make it easier. Then she started to have a lot of luck catching them.

I ran a rooster tail through the shallow end trying to catch some of the bass. They would follow the lure but never hit it.

Catching bluegill, crappie and war mouth on the fly rod.. boys started taking the small bluegill and catching bigger fish with them at our pond in the mtns.

Wore out the bass for about 45min during and after a rain shower. Not huge bass, averaged around 3lbs roughly. Using small bluegill proved to be the key, after they tried to eat them off my fly rod we figured it out quick!

Definitely enjoyable fishing with kids more so now that they do all their own tackle and shit. No need for me to take fish off, bait hooks, etc. I just fish and enjoy the laughter and excitement

Friendship with Bitsy Minnow over. This small bass was super feisty and shook the hook right out when I had my hand in his mouth and it shot into my thumb. I tried to get it out myself but couldn't so I had to go to the walk-in clinic and they cut it out.

We also went fishing at Disney's Fort Wilderness last Friday and Saturday morning. I had one top water hit and a couple hits on a crank bait but none of them really committed. I did try out octopus circle hooks for the kid. She was slaying bluegills with nightcrawlers and a bobber. She caught 7, one almost every cast. The circle hooks worked out great because she is not the best at setting hooks. So she was able to just reel in and the hooks set themselves. I think they were #10 sized and even the smaller bluegill were getting hooked up pretty easily.

Look up the braid line trick, obviously easier if you have an extra person to help . It’s a little more prep work when pulling out treble hooks, it’s about as painless as it gets considering the circumstance. You can snatch them out pretty easily disengaging the barb.

I’m not a fan of trebles for your reason alone. I swap them out for single inlines, so don’t throw the lure away just yet.

My daughter caught her first bass and first fish on artificial bait. Her birthday is at the end of the month so I'm going out to pick her up some things this weekend. My plan is to build her a light spinning combo. She has been doing well using one of my spinning setups, but it seems to be a little big for her. I have an old Shakespeare micro rod that's 4'6" so I'm going to pair it with a smaller reel.

I'm thinking about getting her some tackle to go with it. She caught her first bass on a micro crankbait, so I think I'm going to get her a few Yo Zuri Snap Beans. They seem comparable to the bitsy minnow, but the bitsy minnows hooks get caught together a lot. Hoping the single treble is easier. I'm also thinking about getting her a smaller whopper plopper. I'm looking at the 75 or 60 size. They just seem like the easiest top water bait.

Anything else I'm missing? We are really getting into wading smaller creeks. We are mostly fishing rocky bottom creeks ranging from 1-3 feets in most areas, with pools that can get to 6ft+ in some areas. Anything multi species would be good.

Grab some smaller finesse worms, stuff like smaller crawfish type profiles for those rocky creek beds and plunge areas.

Older boys got down to the lake and snatched up a few bass. They use a fly rod and catch small bluegills and use them as baits usually. Had a few of them break them off, but averaged 50/50 on landing.

Bonus, one of them grabbed a bait caster with a lure and caught a little baby, which was impressive to me. He’s never used a bait caster and hadn’t fished with a weighted zoom worm before. Ran all the way down the hill to show me 🤣

always showing the dog taint

She always tries to go after the fish so she’s turned to the kiddos. She will get in there enough she makes me nervous getting hooked sometimes. Off that part of the dock she is watching the baby fish between the grass! She goes to the creek and hunts crawfish and little fish that get in washed out the dam overflow. She also thinks she has nice thighs, so enjoy.

I’m pretty bummed I didn’t get picked for gator tags this year and didn’t want to splurge on the Florida tags for them… really wanted a gator. Gonna put in my name and wife this year and do it for the FL panhandle too to double up. Don’t wanna pay the guides for the per foot price on their tags.

Here is the haul. I have a few ned rigs I can throw in the box once she opens up all the other stuff. Our cabelas did not have the Whopper Plopper in the 60 size and no Snap Beans.

Beetle spin (specifically, purple) was magic for me the year I got into fishing...bought so many of those. Looks like a great haul, she'll be psyched.

I went fishing on one of the pontoon boats out of the contemporary June 2023 with my FIL and BIL and we killed it. 20+ bass and a crappie
