Fishing Thread

A couple of weeks ago, I went up to the Housatonic River in northwest Connecticut to fish with my father. I caught a brown trout as well as a rainbow trout. My father caught two fish as well. On the fly, small nymphs.

This year, I have not done as much fly fishing as I would have liked. But as we know, if you don't carve out time for these things, they don't happen. Always a good time to get out on the river with him. It looks like tomorrow we are going to make another outing to the Housatonic.

Heck yeah! We went out today, insanely low water (yeah, not much rain here in WNC), and the trout had hit the pools. Missed half a dozen bites, we are bad at fishing flies. Those are nice sized! Are they wild or stocked in that area ?

Caught this guy on a little swim jig with a curly tail grub. Looks like someone caught him and left the hook in. I tried to gently get the hook out but couldn't. So I cut the line at the hook and threw him back in. Any tips on getting these hooks out safely?

You did the right thing. Better to leave the hook in if it's that deep and into stomach or other organs. Trying to remove it at that point will cause a lot more damage, especially if there are barbs.

The fish's digestive fluids will promote some dissolution of the hook and they may be able to pass it eventually. Or new skin will grow around it and they'll learn to live with it.

Little buddy seems to be fairing ok if he's still hungry.

That guy is tiny which makes it tough, but when I’ve got them in the gullet like that, reach in the back of the gills from the outside and work it out if you can do it without tearing them up. That leverage will disengage the barb easier, but you still want to be careful. Sometimes pushing it it further will get it loose but it’s easier with the right tools to keep from hooking it again. You did alright, sometimes you just let it go, the fish is feeding obviously so it’ll be fine

Almost had to lose my southern nice on these folks from MN.. this assumed girlfriend with a group was all about feeding the wild birds. Giving shrimp to the heron, loved the brown pelicans chasing the fish in the hook, wanted to slowly release game fish out of season to the cormorants… these folks were enamored with the fight and teeth of saltwater fish, yet.. mistreated all the fish, catch and release be damned.

Finally had to tell her to stop. If she loved the birds so much, knock it off. If she continued, look 15 yards behind her at the dead pelican, who likely ate a fish on the hook and some idiot didn’t do shit but cut the line..

I love fishing but it’s started to bother me sometimes..

grabbed a new set up, a falcon clearwater rod and a bait caster reel. Shimano curado dc, and it is everything as advertised.

Of my 3 kids, only one cares to fuck with a bait caster. We use spinning set ups for saltwater and fresh, although we mostly saltwater fish.

My 9 year old can sling a 1/4oz plug a mile and zero backlash. Pretty awesome to be able to teach them with a lesser chance of issues like backlashing and birds nests. We about to destroy these bass this spring as a warm up.

It hasn't stopped raining and dropping temp here yet so fishing has been slow. I did how ever pick up a Dock Runner 3' combo when it was on clearance. The line that comes on the reel is garbage so I replaced it with some 8lb braid I had at the house. Man this thing is fun. It fits perfectly in the rod holder of my Kast King over the shoulder bag. I've basically turned it into a dedicated trout magnet set up. It helped me knock the sunk off when the creek was up a few feet in water level. I can cast pretty far with it now, but I would like to upgrade the reel to a cheaper Shimano or Daiwa reel and get 4-6lb braid on it.

Got to knock one off the bucket list. My family and I did the guided bass fishing experience at Disney World. A two hour trip cost around $300 and is on par with what fishing guides at our lakes charge. Our guide Don was a tournament fisherman and was sponsored by Shimano, he was fun to talk to. The first spot we hit was a huge drop off next to the wedding pavilion at Grand Floridian. Kind of surreal to have the Poly, Gran Flo, and the Magic Kingdom Castle in view with the sun rise. We also fished near the fake wave machine that use to run in Bay Lake, and a big flat area close to Fort Wilderness.

You have the option to bring your own equipment or use artificial baits/lures but we just stuck with using nose hooked shiners. We caught around 20 bass in total.

We also fished at Fort Wilderness. When I first pulled up there were people fishing with live bait that weren't catching anything. I thought I would be cooked, but a fluke never fails. I ended up catching two and hooking another one that got off, all while fishing next to dudes using live shiners. So that felt pretty good. I was also using my daughters 4ft ultra light setup so they were pretty fun catches.

Updated the Dock Runner with a Daiwa Crossfire and Suffix 4lb finesse braid. I can bomb a Zman ShadFry and tiny jig halfway across the lake. I also purchased the Columbia x Disney fanny pack. It can fit in a small tackle box and about 4 bags of plastics, plus my trout magnet kit in the front pocket. I've been leaving the tackle bag in the car and just taking a few things with me. It's much easier to bank fish with less stuff.

Agree on the less is best! Love my sling pack, makes hiking in and out enjoyable.

Do not try to pick up a fish by the line. Lost the biggest bass out of this creek I love to go to, probably the biggest spotted bass of my life because I tried to pull him up a 2 foot bank instead of walking 10 feet down where I could get to the water. 😢

Had a good day otherwise. Lots of fish and bites on the fluke and wacky rigged senko.
