Collectible Trading Cards

you find any nick van exels or ken andersons or really any cincinnati cards at all you give your boy a holler

Definitely have a ton of Van Exels. My son was flipping through one of my cases this morning, saw multiples. Will send.

If you want to find a value for the Mario, I’d take it off your hands.

I have been in and out of the hobby my whole life, but am trying to stay out. I hate the current climate of trading cards, as well as the “having to grade” modern cards. It’s such a sham.

Grading vintage and cards that have a chance of being fake? Yeah sure. Just so dumb the climate around modern stuff. At least it’s died down a bit since the pandemic boom. Hockey has cooled off at least.

Just added this card recently. This was a long time want and a card I was screwed out of when I was 14 years old. Waited for the value to dip and snagged it:

I have my collection whittled down. Sold most of it off except some stuff that was special to me. Might start grabbing some low priced cards of HOFers while the dip is still here (Bourque, Yzerman, Coffee, maybe a Gretzky Topps). My kid likes to rip blaster boxes from WalMart here and there so maybe he can get some cool things to add to mine. (Although Upper Deck can get fucked with their $30 blaster boxes and $60 tins).

I'm not a seller (unless I guess if I get into a real pinch). These cards are all going to my kids when they are old enough.

Pretty sure I have a cool Nick Van Exel die cut insert from the 90s around somewhere, and I'll send it along with the Votto bat card when I find it. Loved ripping NBA cards back when I had a team to root for as a kid.

Related... the first time I remember my mom catching me swearing was back then. I was on the phone with my friend who told me the Sonics were eliminated from the playoffs. My reaction: "God dammit!... Sorry!"

Still have the Sam Perkins card we drove 40 miles to have signed at the Southcenter Mall around somewhere. Damn, 90's NBA was the best.

Not sure if anyone here was following the chase for this card. Last week an 11 year old kid pulled the Paul Skenes 1/1 rookie patch autograph card. The Pirates had famously offered the person who finds it two season tickets behind home plate for 30 years and some other things. The kid declined the offer and is listing it for auction. (Good move, kid.)

Pretty cool to see the Pirates actual still come through with a cool move to support the kid. Now if they would just spend some money on players to have a real MLB team.

Fuck Bob Nutting. He is probably going to make them pick up the tab for dinner.

I'm very curious to see what this goes for at auction. I assume it's through Goldin?

Goldin would be my guess. The fact that this "11 year old" knew enough to immediately hand deliver it to PSA to get an instant grading and then sent it to an auction house makes me believe the speculation about this being a breaker's kid that found the card. My guess, based on the hype of the card, that it goes for over a million. Dumbest purchase ever to pay that kind of money for a rookie pitcher's card. I like Paul Skenes and I hope he has a HOF career but a couple (hypothetical) Tommy John surgeries and below average Pirates teams don't necessarily make me want to invest in his cards during this much hype.

thome50 did you get your money as soon as your card was authenticated? Mine is scheduled to land tomorrow and I'm wondering how quickly I'll see the funds.
I did finally get the funds. It was a little nerve racking. Looking at the auction they were not going to pay me until the card was authenticated. After it was authenticated (took about a day and a half) they then said I needed to update my bank information. My bank account was already tied to my eBay account and I have been getting direct deposits in there for the last year or more without issue. I jumped through the hoops and got the account confirmed a week and a half ago. It was the Friday before MLK day so eBay said that the funds were deposited Saturday morning. My bank didn't show anything but it was likely because of the holiday weekend. Funds showed up last Tuesday morning.

Glad a kid found it and not some twitch stream douche.

I think they thought they had something with the Livvy Dunne meet and great.

I imagine if the kid was 2 years older he'd be more conflicted.

Last year a smaller company released a new product called Bo Jackson's Battle Arena. Basically a TCG based on pro athletes, with characters created representing them. Lots of variations and short prints, and then you have the autos. It caught my eye, since it blends the TCG popularity with the sports card genre, blending rookie cards of those characters in, which is one of the value spike aspects of sports.

Anyway, they were very exclusively distributed, and for most people really only available on eBay. I hemmed and hawed a few days on whether to jump in or not, and ended up pulling the trigger (while pooping at work, for max value) and bought a box for a few hundred dollars.

Sometimes you time things right. The next day the cheapest available was a little over twice what I paid, and I've been keeping tabs. Here's the latest sold

Some 10-15 or so years ago I ordered some boxes online and since I spent over a certain amount they also sent along some free packs of some product that they needed to get rid of. A couple years ago after moving into our house I was going through boxes and came across those thirty or so packs of 2009/10 Panini Adrenalyn XL basketball cards. No clue what they were, but vaguely remembering how I got them I looked them up and saw they were going for $15-20 on ebay. Should have sold them, but wheres the fun in that; opened until I got a Steph Curry rookie. Think I still have some sealed packs kicking around in a closet.

Really, if I've learned anything about collecting it is that if I want to profit I should buy boxes and forget they exist and then sell them sealed. Wish I had kept Magic packs sealed when I was a kid....really didn't need that 20th copy of Chaoslace or whatever was in there

Very much this, with the caveat that you do it with sets other people aren't having the same ideas about. Like comic books in the 90s, everyone thought if they just bought a bunch and put the away they'd be worth a fortune now. That doesn't work when they're printed to oblivion and even people outside the hobby are thinking it.

I'm seeing it a lot in the Pokemon market. Hoarders and scalpers buying every single thing they can at a market high, when product is still in full print. When an old 90s Magic box gets found in a closet and sells for a fortune NOW its because the majority of people ripped it at the time and played with it.

You have to luck into the vast majority of these stories. Fun if you do. Still have the Steph rookie? Definitely worth grading if so.

If I ever need/want to sell I guess I'll get it graded, but I mostly stopped collecting sports card a long time ago, and if I'm not looking to flip I see no reason to spend more money on them at the moment. It's part of the problem of being a collector. I've got so much cool shit but I'd take most of it to my grave before selling.

Me thinking back to all those OG Pokémon packs I ripped as a kid…
