Collectible Trading Cards

Insure it. Seriously
I was looking to change it out from USPS to UPS or Fedex and do it overnight with insurance. However, since it is going out via eBay they wanted me to use USPS Ground Advantage through them. I went ahead with it and they make you do a signature requirement and they had an option to get full insurance on the winning bid amount. All in all it was just under $50 but it's good for the peace of mind. I also went directly to the post office, waited in line, and then handed it to a casher and got a receipt showing that I'd dropped it off. Not much more I can do than that. It's also only about a four hour drive away to the authentication company. It should get there no later than Thursday. 🤞

Shit gets scary. Not quite the jackpot you have but I just sent out a $400 card last week and it had to go for authentication first. Right to southern California. Luckily it made it ok.

edit - this kinda makes me sound like the I don't care about the fires and am only worried about a football card. Not the sentiment I want to express, was just a little nervous sending it.

Interesting. I kind of assumed they had numerous authenticators across the country so that the distance to ship was relatively short where ever the person was. I just checked the tracking and it is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. Still crossing my fingers.

How long did it take for the card to be authenticated for you? Do you get your money right after it is deemed authentic?

I got paid once I shipped the card, your payout availability depends on how many sales you have on ebay. If you're newer or don't have many sales, you typically have to wait until the card is marked as delivered for the funds to be released. My card went to Santa Ana and it is still being authenticated, it arrived there yesterday.

Interesting. I just checked my email and I have two from eBay yesterday and this morning saying I need to verify something with my bank account before they will pay out. I've seen that in the past but they have always still paid out. Granted those were for cards I was selling at $10 and such, not $2k. Always seemed scammy but looking at the email and everything else it looks legit.

I had to re-verify some things not super long ago so maybe you’ve hit a certain threshold for something especially since that card went for so much.

Not cards, but my kid is obsessed with opening and playing with these [largely worthless] Headliners toys that I for some reason evacuated from my parents' when the fire was raging last week. So far we have opened Prime Time, Minister of Defense, Air McNair and Barry Sanders.

thome50 Got an email this morning that the card has been authenticated. So 1-2 business days maybe?
Thankfully the card was delivered successfully yesterday afternoon, per USPS tracking. I still haven't gotten the funds yet after re-verifying my banking information. I just looked at the listing and it does say, "Thank you for shipping your order and uploading tracking details. Your funds from this sale will be on hold until our authentication partners inspect your item. You may expect funds to be released once the item is verified."

Hoping it can be verified by the beginning of next week. I thought I read somewhere about a eBay and PSA partnership as it pertains to authenticating cards. Which would make sense as PSA's corporate office is in Santa Ana. Though I also read this week that PSA has a huge backlog of submissions that is slowing down grading. I hope authentication isn't slowed a ton but your example here does give me a little more hope.

Rummaging through more of my memorabilia from my parents' house, found all of these. Don't know if any of them are worth anything. Never had em graded or anything like that.

I've come to the conclusion that I have potentially thousands of dollars worth of cards here. Not planning on selling any, but good to know. Interestingly my hockey cards seem to be the most desirable.

Here are just a few. Haven't had a chance to dig through everything yet. My Lemieux pic is sideways but too lazy to retake. I have some stuff going back or the 70s (Bossy, Trottier etc.) in a different case that I haven't rummaged through. And lots of early 90s stuff.

Cool stuff! The vintage baseball cards are definitely worth some money. To keep them safe and up their value you should look at grading them. PSA and SGC have some good sales on vintage cards randomly throughout the year.

I know nothing about the hockey cards but if the Lemieux is worth something I'd get it out of that screw down case sooner than later. Those things are notorious for damaging cards far more than they help. Just a penny sleeve and top loader is more than enough. I hope your kids get into sports cards when they get older. It was/is such a cool hobby to share with my son.

If you want to find a value for the Mario, I’d take it off your hands.

I have been in and out of the hobby my whole life, but am trying to stay out. I hate the current climate of trading cards, as well as the “having to grade” modern cards. It’s such a sham.

Grading vintage and cards that have a chance of being fake? Yeah sure. Just so dumb the climate around modern stuff. At least it’s died down a bit since the pandemic boom. Hockey has cooled off at least.

Just added this card recently. This was a long time want and a card I was screwed out of when I was 14 years old. Waited for the value to dip and snagged it:

I have my collection whittled down. Sold most of it off except some stuff that was special to me. Might start grabbing some low priced cards of HOFers while the dip is still here (Bourque, Yzerman, Coffee, maybe a Gretzky Topps). My kid likes to rip blaster boxes from WalMart here and there so maybe he can get some cool things to add to mine. (Although Upper Deck can get fucked with their $30 blaster boxes and $60 tins).

The eBay authentication seems to run separately from PSA grading so I wouldn’t worry too much. Hope they get you sorted quickly but holiday weekend may mean a slight delay.
