All Things Coffee

Not sure why. It's a classified ad for a different espresso machine from the same company. A 2022 speedster in LA. I added spaces to the link:

My account got approved. $12k is wild. Since this conversation I have been looking at models, watching YouTube videos…I like espresso, but prefer a pour over. Not sure if I would hang with the upkeep/maintenance side of having a high end machine.

It's a completely absurd amount of money for a coffee machine.

Being made in small volumes in Europe, using the best materials and designs, the quality of coffee, and the cool design somehow makes the price seem justified.

Not really much maintenance - backflush regularly, replace the group gasket annually and maybe a random other part every few years. As long as your water has the right level of minerals.

What kind of equipment did you enter into this hobby with? Had you ever used this equipment before (worked as a barista)? How long did it take for you to get comfortable pulling shots?

I went to Italy recently and now I'm buying a Breville Bambino. I am an idiot and don't know what I am doing, so I am not spending big money or anything. But I want to just get some Whole Foods or so tier entry level beans to get used to this with.

What can I get at the supermarket that isn't complete trash while I dial in my rig?

You all have any recommendations on cleaning the burrs in a coffee grinder? If my grinder runs out of beans for even a few moments I get an oily acrid smell. I’m wondering if I need to pull them out somehow and give them a good cleaning. 🧽

Do they have anything local that you enjoy?

I've found using oxiclean free to be the best way to clean coffee oil from the plastic hopper and gasket on my baratza. Recommend using gloves as its pretty tough on the skin.

That cleaning article mentions that it used to be recommended to use Rice to clean out a coffee grinder, but then goes on to say that Rice is too hard and can damage your grinder.

What it forgets to mention is that you should be using Instant Rice, which is much softer.
So, definitely take the grinder apart and brush and blow it out carefully once in a while like the article talks about, but feel free to also throw in some Instant Rice once a month or whenever, as it's probably a ton cheaper than those specialty cleaning tablets.

With my Breville it's easiest to pull shots of dark roast/espresso beans. Once you have the hang of it you can go with lighter roasts. I haven't been to whole foods in a while but I used to get their freshly roasted beans from the bins and they were pretty good.
