Healthy Habits

Im just gonna go ahead and say it. People who regularly and on purpose do fasting for weight loss are built different. I tried, I cant do it.

I guess I do a very mild version of fasting or maybe its better described as time restrictive eating. I needed to switch shit up to drop weight quick and my answer was to stop eating breakfast. So I only ate lunch and supper with no snacking or eating beyond 8 pm.

Man…. I am absolutely ravenous by lunchtime and its a very mindful case of having to pump the breaks and make sure when I eat, I dont overeat and consume more than I would if I just ate breakfast too.

Unless im sick or super busy I cannot imagine 24+ hours without food.

Stakem You are correct, regular fasting must be difficult. Yesterday, I had blood work drawn at 12:30 PM.

So, I was forced to fast. Normally, I would have granola, fruit and milk at 6:30 AM. 2-3 cups of coffee at the same time. 9:45 AM, I would have a banana.

Only water from 9PM the night before, until a little after my appointment at 12:30PM the following day. Immediately afterwards, I ate a roast beef sandwich & then half a bagel. And I felt like a over-indulgent eater.

Down 34.2 lbs as of this morning. The belt that I have used forever is now too big and my jeans are starting to get to that point too. Some shirts are way too big on me now. My goal is another 35-40 lbs. My Dad just told us he rented a house on the beach in Sanibel next March so I now have a target date to use. I definitely feel the best I have in a while.

Posting here for accountability. I promised myself ive never weigh more than 250lbs ever again and after almost 3 weeks off from regular physical activity and freedom to eat whatever after my powerlifting competition I weighed in at exactly 250lbs today.

Game plan is to drop 30lbs as quickly as possible. I know the first 15 comes easy. Its going from 230 to 220 that takes the most structure and suffering for me to go through. Im gonna make it a point to drop to under 220 and try to maintain it this time despite having a powerlifting meet on my radar for September.

The plan is to let whatever happens, happen and not worry about the weights being lifted being more than ever before but instead just trying to do the best I am capable of at the lowest bodyweight ive ever competed at.

My daughter has expressed interest in losing some weight as well so we are going to undertake this journey together. She had a knee reconstructive surgery scheduled for June 16, so the more weight she loses now, the better and easier her recovery post surgery will be as well.

I hesitated in posting this before but think I will share it now as someone might find it useful.

We all know that the number on the scale is just 1 metric and how we look/feel/clothes fit is much more tangible evidence of our progress over time.

Ive frequently talked about water weight swings and how weighing yourself too frequently can be a detriment rather than helpful tool.

Prior to my last powerlifting competition I decided to do a very basic water cut. This was done for several reasons. Most importantly was because I needed to quickly drop some weight to come in under the limit for the class I was competing in. Secondly, I wanted to see how much of a rollercoaster ride I could put my body through without going to extreme measures of doing like sweat suits, sauna, etc. All I did was overload my body with water consumption for 2 days then remove sodium and carbs from my diet for 3 days while tapering my water down from 2 gallons to 1 gallon, to half gallon and then a quart before nothing the day of weigh ins.

In 5 days I lost 12lbs.
In 12 hours I re-gained 15lbs.

As soon as I stepped off the scale for official weigh ins I proceeded to rehydrate my body by chugging pedialyte, gatorade, eating salty food and carbohydrates. The plan was to try and gain back every pound of water I lost and in the process I not only did that but added more. Mission accomplished.

I weighed in at 235lbs on Saturday morning and that night before bed I weighed 249.7 lbs.

To go through this was an interesting learning experience. Friday and Saturday when I was the most dehydrated I was super fatigued and my heart rate was elevated. Would not advise.

Having the hume health pod along for the ride made it even more interesting from a data perspective as it measures hydration along with other metrics. On day 3 and 4 it alerted me of my dehydrated state and advised me to hydrate and not count that log in. On day 6 after fully rehydrating, the weight swing was so great it asked me if a different person was on the scale.

Early on it feels like you are dying, no lie. My wife and both do this, because it’s also flexible in lots of ways for seasons and such, and it actually kind of rewired our brains and habits is probably the better way to go about it.

I wasn’t ever really fat, fat, but I lost 50- ish and I’m close to my high school weight around 180 and feel amazing and have been able to maintain this since we started this a little over a year. My wife is a smaller lady, but she’s had three kids and isn’t one to work out much with her job and life, but has shrunk back into petite XS clothing. I find that just remarkable. My lab work and blood pressure are my measurements mostly and it’s amazing how changing the timing, quantities and quality of what we eat has done. I wish I had the drive to add extra levels like many do- but I simply don’t. We feel like we’ve unlocked an anti aging secret sometimes, and don’t have to really be strict per se in what we eat. I certainly don’t enjoy food as much as I used to, but it’s a trade off.
