Let's All Go to the Movies

I definitely appreciated Penn’s performance more the second time, though I enjoyed it well enough the first time. It was a bit outrageous, but it was clearly intended to be outrageous, so it worked. The second viewing definitely showed a lot more of the craft.

Thought Benicio was the best part the first time and a second viewing only confirmed it. Anyone confused by this movie’s politics or message needs to rewatch his scenes until they learn.

I was definitely rooting for Benicio to win the award, especially when it came out how much of the character he created on set.

I watched Project Hail Mary last night. My cousin is a big fan of the book (he read it twice). I've read it and The Martian, enjoyed TM more as PHM felt like a reskin with Marvel Quip (TM) tone.

The movie nails the book, imo. Cutesy, perfect comedic timing beats, saccharine buddy cop stuff. It was what I expected. Good for shutting your brain off, but not good.

Wicked for Good was such a fucking slog… the 2nd half of that show has always been though.

Great production design and CGI like the first film though and both actresses are perfect.

Saw Project Hail Mary on opening night. I'm a huge fan of the book, listened to the audiobook 3+ times.
I really enjoyed the movie. It took me about an hour to get past comparing it to the book, which obviously provides a huge amount of depth in nearly all aspects. Once I did that, I really appreciated the way the meat of the story was handled and presented. There are things they did that very much affect the character development. While there is certainly a big aspect of comedy and wit and levity in the book, they ramped it up maybe 30% too much in the movie. The biggest disservice to the book in the whole film was the comedy added to the scenes where Stratt essentially has Grace captured and drugged and sent to his death in space against his will. The choice to drop a couple moments of humor into that takes away the gravity of that "decision"; which is a core theme of the entire story. My single biggest gripe. I would have appreciated a bit more of the science delve the film version of The Martian had.
My lovely wife and I agreed that had we not read the book, some things, like the Taumeoba eating the fuel, finding Rocky afterward, why was it Grace that needed to go up and not another scientist- those things were'nt really clear. The process of evolving the Taumeoba to be able to work on Venus and Erid was lost. And a big thing for me was Grace just looking out the window to discover that he was in space was wack; in the book he basically figures it out via experimentation.

However, I loved what they did with the set pieces, the puppeteering, the score and as everyone who has seen it has said- there are scenes that are visually stunning and deserve to be seen on a huge screen. Ryan Gosling did a very good job with the character of Grace. I can nitpick writing and directing decisions, but taking the film and the book as two separate pieces of art, I really, really enjoyed the film.
I really hope it's not in the Best Pic conversation, or anything; RRR was my best-reviewed film of 2022 but it wasn't a better film than Banshees or Tar.

God I hate Disney """"live action""" remakes. Extra quote emphasis because this is a 95% CGI remake of a 100% CGI film.

At least Jermaine Clement should be getting a check from this.

I always find it interesting when I talk to my family in the Boston area that their biggest and best IMAX theater for hundreds of miles around there... with 12-channel sound and IMAX Dual Laser GT picture... is in a fucking furniture store...
