I recall some were surprised when The Testament of Ann Lee was shut out of awards season but finally seeing it, I understand completely. Deeply weird movie, with an almost psychotic sincerity in how it approaches its subject: the 18th century founder of a celibate sect of Protestants dubbed "Shakers".
I always appreciate Fastvold and Corbet's (the team behind The Brutalist and Vox Lux) dedication towards thorny subjects. No different here, as Testament is not afraid to show a controlling religious fundamentalist attempting to build a better world.
Amanda Seyfried a one of a kind talent. Should have seen some recognition for this role. Movie is all her.
Think I kind of loved it.
