Mixed Drinks

Finally got a bottle of Smith and Cross to fuck around with. I feel like Antica probably would have been the better vermouth choice, but I'll figure that out later. Im actively trying to only keep one bottle of vermouth open at a time to maximize turnover and keep them fresh (and chilled Stabby). This Kingston Negroni is pretty, pretty good. Gotta find some more uses for this wild ass rum.

I remembered to put the Icelandic vodka bottle in this photo. This is a drink of 3/4 Icelandic vodka and 1/4 Cointreau , which this James Beard revised bartender’s guide (1976 revision of a 1940 book) calls a Blue Monday (when blue vegetable dye is added) or a Caucasian (yes, I know these names mean different things in the modern era).

It’s pleasant.

Trying the traditional Green Chartreuse vs. Faccia Brutto in the Verte Chaud, or Green Chaud, if you prefer.

Green Chartreuse is the clear winner here. The Faccia Brutto gives a bit of a vegetal note that isn't really welcome.

Not going to kick the Faccia Brutto version out of bed, but won't be making this substitution again.

Been on a paper plane kick with the weather, bonus points for my wife loves them. We aren’t huge cocktail people at home, but easy enough and I’ve enjoyed Eagle rare as the bourbon.

Anyone have some favorites or preference in this instance ? Does a higher proof work better or worse? Something fruit forward like four roses or nutty like a Beam product ?

I find that the amaro makes a bigger difference. Can’t always get Amaro Nonino so I’ll swap in what I can find. That said, I also use 100 proof bourbons in cocktails.

I agree 100% that Nonino and Aperol are the important bottles here. For bourbon in Paper Planes I have used anything from Elijah Craig to Buffalo Trace to McKenna BiB and Evan Williams BiB. It didn't really change the enjoyment of the cocktail at all.

If I don't have Nonino, I don't make Paper Plane.

I think I have noted this elsewhere in this thread, but I prefer a sharper , more bitter Amaro than Nonino. A straight paper plane is easy to guzzle, and I need something to make me stop and think a bit more about each drink. Amaro della Sacra has been that one for me.
