Mixed Drinks

Went with a coffee Negroni tonight

1oz gin
3/4oz coffee liqueur
3/4oz campari
1/4oz sweet vermouth

Not sure if I'll ever have coffee liquor in my arsenal, so need to ask how this is.
Obviously need to like coffee (cuz some people don’t). I’ve seen recipes where the gin is replaced with the coffee liqueur entirely, but I like having the gin in there. Then, ratios will depend on the coffee liqueur that you use. The one I have is actually a barrel aged version of the distillery’s standard, and is a bit sweeter, which is why I lowered the amount of vermouth. Coffee adds flavor and more depth overall. Good to have options over the standard recipe.

This afternoon was for negroni ratio testing. Each glass had 1oz each of Campari and sweet vermouth and then 1, 1.5, and 2oz of gin respectively. 1.5 was probably my favorite, but I wouldn't kick any of them out of bed.

1.5:1:1 was always my go-to ratio when bartending. It allowed the gin to come through and hid a little bit of the campari bitterness/rounded out the flavors.

I have been thinking about negroni variations for months and how you might be able to split the spirit base. Here is my first attempt.

Since this is kind of a half negroni and half boulevardier, I like to call this Meet Me Halfway. A negroni is a bit of a summer cocktail, a boulevardier is a bit of a winter cocktail. Here we are in the fall.

.75oz Rittenhouse Rye
.75oz London Dry Gin
1oz Campari
1oz Cocchi Torino sweet vermouth

I am not sure if rye was the perfect choice here, as the mint notes are up front. I added a dash of orange bitters after a few sips and it rounded out nicely. I am not mad at this attempt by any means. Maybe a bourbon instead of rye next time.

In my head I also have a three spirit split marinating. What will a rum addition do? I think that the 1.5:1:1 ratio is the right way to go, but maybe not.

Anyway, cheers to the weekend.

Whitty Comeback
2oz Rye
.5oz Averna Amaro
.5oz ginger simple syrup
.5oz lemon juice
Dash orange bitters

I like the flavors but the syrup adds too much sugar sweet for me. There's a riff that cuts the syrup in half and adds luxardo. Room to experiment with ingredients and ratios but will keep the same rye and amaro.
