Membership Renewal Season

This used to be a thread on TB so thought I’d ask on here - what memberships are you going to squander money on next year?

Renewed: Casey (no brainer), Modern Times
Well hello there: Barclay’s, De Garde
I have no idea why I’m in this thing: Garagiste
Farewell: Alesmith
Yeah well I didn’t get in so stick me on the waiting list I suppose: Barreled Souls

Is there a business that proxies for Casey or do you just know someone?

Continuing: pips, bruery, Pye road
New: private press, barclay, adesanya, Tommie Sjef, second city
Goodbye: boneflower, 4 fires, maniacal, alesmith
Undecided: garagiste

I feel like I have forgotten something here.

Why boneflower gone but maybe / undecided on garagiste? From a membership perspective

In 8th state microcosm
New Barclay
Not in but wanted private press, modern times

Other members can proxy. There are quite a few locals who do it as a large scale/transactional type thing. I just shoot boxes back and forth with a cool guy I got to know.
Casey is my only membership, besides a local mug club (Counterweight) that rolled over our 2020 memberships to 2021.

The Casey proxy thing is kind of a PITA. The locals are basically forced to ship USPS bc of overzealous Fedex/UPS employees. USPS shipping for a 12 shipper is basically a million dollars. I've had a few Denver-based guys that proxied for me over the years, but now use one of the locals as the "transnational type thing. I don't buy that many bottles though.

Why all the Alesmith dumping?

Quality issues did it for me. Just wasn't worth the hassle when multiple bottles had issues, and what was left was kinda just meh.

For one I have too much mead.

For another, Boneflower meads are $$$ but sooo much sweeter than necessary, which makes me feel like a lot of them are just pulled from the tanks too soon or something. A few have been good (and I've tried to send out the ones I've liked in boxes) but not enough to justify the membership. On top of that, there's so few of them. (I think 12 in two years.) It's like, why pay a large up front cost and then get very little out of it? And then there's the membership party, which I went to once, and which was frankly miserable. Maybe 12 different breweries/meaderies showed up, but each with a single keg (or less!) and several didn't even bother to show up. Meanwhile, maybe 300 people packed into a space that probably could reasonably hold half that. I had a better time across the street at a random brewery (The Sour Note) an hour before the party itself. Could they work out these issues? Probably! Will they? No! Why not? Well, covid will stop the next iteration anyway, and waaaay too many folks in the group were like "OMG What a great party!!!" and honestly that's enough for them to stay cheap and do things this way. When I contrast with Pips or Garagiste parties, it's just a disappointment.

That said I don't join these memberships for the parties, they're just a nice addition. I join for the quality of the mead. And I think it's just not quite there. $250 for the first two years got me 2 bottles, a shirt, a glass, a corkscrew, and a sticker. I would not at all complain about that price if that meant access to tons of high quality stuff, but I think that has fallen short of the mark.

Now, on the Garagiste front, I've been in it since the beginning and I buy less and less each year, but there's a few things keeping me on the fence: the high quality (and low price) spirits that are available to members only (lots of great whiskey); some interesting collaborations and experiments; still very good pricing; and finally, a couple good parties. I'm less likely to take advantage of the latter for a while what with covid and Florida, but the former still has me coming back for more. I'm talking really good single barrel bottles for well below retail. That alone is hard to let go of.

Can you give some context here? Are FedEx and UPS stealing bottles? I'm not sure I follow you on the overzealous part

I assume it's more the employees refusing to ship boxes due to alcohol content (whether they open the boxes or just make assumptions). This has been a problem for my SARA proxy in the past.
Basically this. I dug up the 2018 post from one of the local guys when FedEx first went sideways for him. UPS seems to have followed suit at some point in 2019.
Welp... Fuck.
Glenwood FedEx has a manager named Chris who is now on red alert for alcohol being shipped through his ground facility in gwood.
He searched and held a bunch of packages I dropped at multiple local spots that all go to his facility he manages last week. Then called me to come get them. Dropped them again a week later with diff labels and he found some of them again. He seems really into doing this and was happy to let me know FedEx can search through anything you bring to them to ship with any reason they deem necessary or none at all. It's thier policy as a privately run shipping company.
I will add this guy is one of the most dickweed douschbag entitled asshole motherfuckers I have had the displeasure of dealing with in a good while. He talked over me followed by yelling at me it is illegal to ship alcohol like this and hung up on me twice and when I told him politely and calmly on the third call I would come in to speak to him in person if he hung up again he threatened to have the police there if i came by... Haha. Bitch...
He also informed me he is now destroying any packages sent through FedEx. Which is what he did with one of my person trade boxes that I dropped last week that was as bullet proof a package with rattlers and all as you can make or send and not in a shipper. Fuck. 4 Casey Cut bottles gone.
He said under these circumstances FedEx has a policy to send the box to Salt lake city to be documented and destroyed. Which is what he did last week in Friday to mine and I'm not sure who elses... He could have also chose to call and give them back again but didn't. He wanted me to know this.
He claimed to know I am not the only local person sending boxes and that it would not be tolerated anymore whatsoever.
Did i mention this guy is a super dousch.
They are searching for liquid packages via shaking and also on the alert for shipper boxes of all sizes.
Other Options:
Locally here we also have FedEx Express which is more expensive but a separate entity. All boxes sent this way have made it successfully with no problems. Not that that is fullproof either but an FYI. I also use the USPS which is about 80 a 12 shipper. So more expensive but never had any problems with them ever.
UPS has "lost" several packages of mine over the years and I have preferred to use FedEx until now.
Obviously this is a problem. Not sure how to address it but figured everyone needed the info.
If I am proxying for you then this will have to be taken into consideration if you would like me to continue to try to drop boxes for you.
I will expect a shit load of messages now about proxy stuff....
Sorry to be the bearer of this unfortunate news. Fuck. If I can help out further let me know.
Have a good day anyway and Cheers!!
