Let's All Go to the Movies

Enjoying the Criterion streaming service. I watched Out of the Past (1947) and then watched its remake Against All Odds (1984).

Out of the Past was a classic noir with Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer and Kirk Douglas. It was cool seeing scenes of Bridgeport, California in the ‘40’s. I have fished there many times and recognize the Main Street.

Against All Odds was admittedly not a great movie, but it was so cool seeing LA scenes from my childhood. Jeff Bridges plays a pro football player and his team practices at the El Segundo Junior High School that the Raiders actually used. A hilltop scene is where the Getty Center was built. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen Jeff Bridges look more attractive. Dude looked like a model. Jane Greer, the femme fatale in the original plays a big role as the mother in the remake.
 
If Silent Friend (directed by Ildikó Elnyedi and starring the inimitable Tony Leung) has a plot, it's basically this:



Loved it. Won't be for everyone. I cheered like a marvel mid-credits cameo scene when Lea Seydoux popped up halfway thru.



Also deserves mentioning how great of a job new indie distributor 1-2 Special has been doing this past year. Impeccable slate of films.
 


It’s actually happening. I’ll post when this goes up but this is going to be Lionsgate Limited and will sell out immediately on physical. They normally only make a couple thousand copies these days.

Literally the release I’ve been waiting 2 decades for.
 

Netflix took the open IMAX slot they left open when they delayed Narnia and inserted The Adventures of Cliff Booth for an exclusive 2 week run before streaming.

Finally they're starting to get it.

Maybe I’m just fed up with horror, but I found Obsession to be an absolutely laborious watch. From the reviews and other readings across the interwebs, it seems like this opinion is a pretty extreme outlier.

This movie (at least the trailer) seems to have the exact same premise as an episode Buffy the Vampire Slayer from the 2nd or 3rd season and I hate that nobody seems to be pointing this out.

In that episode Xander has a witch cast a spell that women would find him irresistible. It ends with them all becoming so obsessed with him that they want to kill him just so the other girls can't have him.

I can't be the only one that noticed.
 
Holy shit I never go to AMC/Regal... is this really how much those stupid popcorn buckets I keep seeing cost?!

I had a great time with I Love Boosters. Great central performances, the explosive pop-art aesthetic that makes everything look like the candy Keke Palmer’s character is constantly eating, and the succinct expression of class-based politics and plausible explanation for how it could work. The “Kick Out the Jams” needle drop made me want to salute the screen. LaKeith Stanfield in full bozo mode. A WILD Don Cheadle performance. And, because it’s a Boots Riley film, a crazy sideways swing into sci-fi when you weren’t expecting it. I can’t wait to watch it again.
 
I don’t know much about the Paramount/Warner Bros deal but I’ve seen you all mention it on here quite a bit. How is it being funded?

I ask because Ellison’s core business is in a very tight spot right now. Oracle signed a $300bn dollar deal last September to be a major infrastructure provider for Open AI. According to this article Oracle's debt to equity ratio is now 415%. Open AI itself is still burning heaps of money of course (estimated $16bn loss this year).

Saw the janky ScreenX version tonight. God that format absolutely sucks. The side projectors going on and off was distracting as hell.

Agree the movie itself is ok.
Filoni playing an X-Wing pilot was next level cringe
