Let's All Go to the Movies

Guess I'll check out One Battle in Imax 70mm at one of the largest screens in the world before leaving NYC.
Fuck yeah! Just saw Interstellar imax 70mm again at the Science Museum in London last night

Odd quirk about the screen last night: there is an aisle splitting the seats down the middle meaning there's no dead center seat :(
BFI is supposed to have an awesome screen supposedly up there with Lincoln Square, but the tickets are crazy expensive

Resurrection
Bi Gan (Long Days Journey Into Night) puts dreams to film. In Resurrection, he posits film as our collective dream and takes us through the history of cinema in a series of vignettes connected to the senses. I don't think the purpose is to be coherent - it's often not. It is however three hours of the most stunning frames I've seen this year. I must've thought "how the fuck did he film this" a dozen times. Unlike Radu Jude's Dracula, the other 3 hour movie I saw at NYFF, this didn't feel like an endurance test. The final doomsday vignette could be the best film of the year.

The Fence (q&a with director Claire Denis)

Denis' latest is a bit of a turkey but if you get a chance to hear the old masters speak in person, you do it. A stage adaptation with some truly dire dialogue that Matt Dillon could not elevate. Regular Denis player Isaach de Bankolé is great though in the sort of stoic, mysterious role he excels at. Her stuff is really hit or miss these days - I liked Stars At Noon more than most, Both Sides of the Blade is bad, and High Life is amongst her best - but I won't miss any of it.

Anemone
DDL's son shows a lot of promise as a filmmaker, particularly with some amazing images, but this felt pretty damn lifeless even with three great actors at the center. DDL is of course incredible in a surprisingly vulnerable role. Hope this isn't his last.

Watched the talkie version of high treason this week. The quality is all over the place. Some scenes are mst3k-worthy and others are Oscar-worthy. 100% worth a watch.
