Fishing Thread

Did a few trips out in the bay at my favorite spot. Decent weather and good fishing conditions. Super clean water as it usually is, the seagrass is super healthy at the head of the bay.



Nabbed a somewhat rare to find, redfish missing any tail marking/spot. Both sides void of the black dot. Pretty unique and a great size for family dinner.

Managed to hit my limits two days in a row, so that was a pretty good time and provided some good groceries. It was good to be picky and throw back fish for better ones!

Trying to get into more cold water fishing and the KY DNR has been stocking rainbow trout in the waterways close to me. I spent a good bit of time talking to the fly guy at Cabelas and he helped me pick out a few things to try. I'm using ultra light spinning gear with a bubble float, so my options are a little limited. I tried fishing the float and fly for half a day with a ton of trout jetting up to it and turning away at the last second. Fun but very frustrating. I ended up tying on a Zman Flashback Mini chatterbait with a minnow style trailer and ended up catching my first trout ever on my very first cast...

A week later I went to the Tailwaters of a decent sized lake after they stocked it. Using a #2 Mepps I caught a nearly 3lb largemouth that I was not expecting. Landing a chunk largie on ultra light in 960 CFS discharge was pretty fun. This fish was peeling drag.

I've been watching a lot of The Homeless Fisherman lately and got really inspired to try out paddle board fishing. I'm not really a big boat on a lake kind of guy. When I go fishing I really like wading creeks and being in the water. So I kind of liked the idea of sitting on the board with your feet in the water kind of just floating along. I also like how light and portable it is, because I can drop it into the creeks and smaller hard to access water ways very easily.

Took it out on it's maiden voyage at Shanty Hollow lake. This lake is 135 acres, but the vast majority of it is on private land and it only has a single boat ramp and maybe 100ft of bank where you can fish. So even though it's less than 5 minutes from my house, I would never go out there. Now I can see myself heading out there at least once a week.

I woke up Saturday morning at a little before 6am and headed over to get on the lake as soon as the sun came up. I spent the next hour and a half paddling around and fishing with the ultra light. I didn't run into a single other boat or kayak.

I bought the car cigarette outlet air pump, so I just set the the PSI and it automatically inflates it. It takes about 3-4 minutes to get up to pressure. The only thing is it's loud AF, so I didn't love that I could be disturbing people while it inflates.

I love how light and easy it is to carry to the water. I also love that I can bring it in our SUV or in my car. The whole set up cost me $200 for the board and pump, so if it blows up after one season, I'll just buy another one.

I've also built a crate to attach to the board for my next adventure.
