Random Food Thoughts

Now I'm trying to think what types of bagged tortilla chips I've ever had. I just assumed they were always corn.
In stores all the commercial chips are corn. I remember in the 90’s someone tried to mass market flour tortilla chips. I can’t remember the brand. I loved it but it never caught on. It’s only in restaurants that they make them.

We did get a very cheap bag of restaurant style flour tortilla chips the other week and I could not remember the last time I had them. When they are great they are great (fresh and crispy out of the fryer) but corn is king for bagged chips.

Go get ya some Calidad chips and it'll change your mind. They're like $2.50 for a big bag at the Mexican grocery store. Tostitos can pound sand.
Never had these. Tostitos suck and are awful for dipping. Most commercially available tortilla chips are over salted and lack any real corn flavor.

Push pop sushi is absurd and expensive. May go back and try the pick your own pieces but my assumption overall is Osaka is still way better bang for your buck in terms of sushi in the Loop. This is just for the Gram.
Every time I've seen these the pricing is just dumbassery.

Much rather go to my local where I can get a roll, 8 nigiri, soup, and salad for $24.

Osaka is on Michigan Ave a few blocks away. Their sushi is decent if not fancy/earth shattering. But they do some spectacular boba smoothies there. Pick 1-2 fruits, add boba if you like. Get 1-2 rolls. A+ lunch in Grant Park on a warm day.

No, they’re a bullshit brand. The quality is very low compared to good conservas for the price point. The only one I liked was the fly by jing (another bullshit brand) collab but it wasn’t because of the quality of the fish.

What are some to seek out?

Im just starting to dip my toes into it. I was just surprised to see fishwife at my local grocery store.

Basically anything from Portugal, Spain or Scandinavia. Ortiz is generally a good bet that you can find in grocery stores.
OceanOfMead was the one who put me onto the fact that zingerman’s in Ann Arbor runs a tin fished sale every year (I think spring or summer). You can get good value by buying their bundles like this giant tin of tinned fish I got:

But ive been more into buying the smoked canned tuna from Wildfish Cannery in Alaska. It’s more related to canned tuna but it’s so fucking good. But also very pricey.
The popping tins Substack had some good reviews and recipes. The sardinfluencer on instagram used to have good recs but I’m not on the app anymore.
Rainbow Tomato Garden has a crazy selection.

Jose Gourmet, Ramon Pena, Conservas de Cambados, Ortiz for sardines, Matiz is hit or miss.

Fangst had some interesting things.

I haven't tried a ton of newer brands, but I have enjoyed a few Fishwife releases (probably not due to the quality of fish) Though their presentation is pretty horrible compared to some of the Portuguese/Spain tins. Opening a can of Ramon Pena, the sardines were a work of art.
