Let's All Go to the Movies

"I don't know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again," the 80-year-old filmmaker said.

"Martin was kind when he said it's not cinema. He didn't say it's despicable, which I just say it is."

Yowza

Every time this happens it reminds me of Ebert’s column about how video games can never be art.

I think the anger stems from the fact that two of the greatest filmmakers of all time can't get movies funded because studios are just IP farms these days. There is very little opportunity to make movies with studio support unless it's blockbuster IP. Marvel fans getting up in arms about it is comical. You won. Superhero movies dominate the medium. Let people complain.

I loathe the fact the films with the largest availability and distribution are 100-part comic book franchises, bio pics featuring mostly people who are still alive, and the 3rd or more adaptation or sequel of other popular franchise.
I used to love going to the movies and I find myself watching the same old stuff because I would rather watch the same old version than a shitty reboot/remake or the life story of someone barely older than me. You can probably find a dozen times I have made this same comment because this trend is showing no sign of going away. #old

For example, playing at my local theater right now:

Maleficent sequel
Zombieland sequel
Joker
Addams Family cartoon reboot
It sequel
Rambo 17
Downton Abbey

And then three originals:
Abominable ($75M budget Pixar)
Hustlers
Gemini Man

I mean it’s regular people and not say, Elton John or Bruce Springsteen, but you get my drift.

Ok, but why arent these guys complaining about steaming piles like Gemini Man getting made? At least the Avengers are movies people want to see. They're picking and choosing what to yell at clouds about, and it just comes off as petty.

there can never be enough Rambo movies....

Why would they complain about an original, big budget action movie getting made? Why would anyone FFS?

Because it's garbage. The discussion is what is or isn't cinema, or worthy of being recognized as an artistic creation.

Why would that apply to Apocalypse Now (Heart of Darkness ripoff, to play devil's advocate) and Gemini Man, but not to Endgame?

Marvel won. You guys aren't the underdogs. Auteurs left behind by the Big Content machine can air their grievances. Their gripes won't hurt you. I promise.

But it's not enough to dominate the medium. Anyone who speaks against it must be e-destroyed. Shout down the pebble throwers from atop the tanks.

The similarities in how the movies are made aside, it's only a matter of time before Marvel uses the HFR technology Ang Lee pioneered for Gemini Man, at which time Marvel fans will cream their pants over it.

Oh hellll yeah.

Back to the Future Trilogy being released on 4K disc.

The first Scream movie is a great slasher flick. The genre satire along with a solid whodunnit and memorable characters made it a treat to rewatch for the first time in a decade+. The sense of dread from a simple phone call is well done, the movie is laugh out loud funny, and that 90's soundtrack isn't so bad either. Exposed a lot of people to Nick Cave.

A great Halloween season movie.

I rewatched Hellraiser for the first time in a long time the other day. The practical effects look pretty decent for when it was made, but the energy coming from the puzzle box was straight cartoon. The movie isn't so much scary as it is creepy. There was no tension there for me, but it's still classic horror for the overall atmosphere.

My biggest annoyance about the Scream franchise is that it tied up Wes Craven in the last years of his life with all the (honestly pretty fucking) unnecessary sequels.

I wish he would've farmed that out (like Wishmaster or the vast majority of Nightmare sequels) just because we could've gotten 3 more original WC movies in theory.

*shrug*

BTW since we're on the subject: If you haven't seen Wishmaster.... go watch at least the first one.

Wishmaster 2 is so fucking dumb and I love it though.

What other movie features some guy wishing his lawyer would "go fuck himself" and this happens?
