John Travolta makes some motherfucking decisions with his performance. Knowing that Travolta's own son, who passed away as a teen, was autistic is just another layer of WHAT THE FUCK. For real, this is his first line in the film:

Devon Sawa plays the "antagonist" (I use quotation marks because it's never clear who Durst thinks we should root for), a two-faced, big name actor who rides around with his son in his mid-price luxury car LISTENING TO LIMP BIZKIT. I'm not fucking joking.

The ending does not make a lick of sense but it's so wild that it fits with all of the other odorous bullshit.

Feels like I need to watch The Godfather tonight to make up for that.

The trailer makes it look like a fun comedy, but film twitter will have you know that it is a stress-ride in the vein of Good Time. Still very much looking forward to it. It will be nice to have some levity mixed in with the discomfort.

Also also, if you love Alien and have never watched the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, watch it. In addition to be a crazy awesome documentary, without that project bringing together Dan O'Bannon, Moebius, and Giger we basically wouldn't have Alien.

The new 4K transfer is pretty choice. Pick up the disc if you’ve got the hardware.

Watched Spider-man Far From Home again last night because my wife wanted to try Spider-man again because she’s been reading all the news about Sony/Disney/MCU.

She actually enjoyed it (she really didn’t dig Homecoming but loved Spider-verse)

We so basic compared to all the indie films you guys watch, lol.

Picked up a $2.99 rental of Brightburn from Amazon to watch tomorrow night since it was on sale this weekend.
 
Pain & Glory - 7/10

Antonio Banderas has never been better than in this Pedro Almovodar (Volver) semi-autobiographical reflection on life choices and their physical and mental consequences. It's a mature take on middle age and the creative process. Sardonic humor and languid regret are both in supply as Banderas' character sulks around his apartment reminiscing about his childhood while self medicating with heroine. In what is shaping up to be a very unconventional awards season, don't be surprised if Pain & Glory crosses over from international feature to get a nomination or two. Banderas plays the aging artist in a creative slump to a tee. His career best performance makes you wonder why he could never find quite the same critical success in Hollywood.

Detective Pikachu - 6.5/10

Pleasantly surprised here. It's rare these days to see a movie with very G material that can keep my interest the whole way through. Detective Pikachu does exactly that with a fun plot and just enough action. Even more remarkable is how easily digestible they made the Pokemon world to non-fans. A Hollywood made live action Pokemon should be a disaster and this was decidedly not one. Thumbs up.
 
Brightburn - Holy crap... this was the feel bad movie of the year for me. Superman meets The Good Son, except Macaulay Culkin fucking blows a hole through Elijah Wood’s head with a fucking laser.

Impressive hard R gore for a studio flick, which I’d expect from a Gunn produced flick.

Don’t know that I’d want to watch it again but it was a fun, if goddamn bleak horror/superhero film. Kept me on edge if you like that.

I need to watch a comedy now to balance my system, lol.
 
It's amazing the amount of traction Hocus Pocus has gotten over the years. I thought it was kinda a throwaway film when I saw it as a kid but apparently every girl who is age 29-37 now thought it was the greatest fucking thing they've seen in their entire fucking lives. Including my wife.
