Let's All Go to the Movies

I saw Midsommar on Sunday with two friends and there were 7 people in the theater including us and it was in the smallest theater they had in the back corner.

The Disney domination is worrisome.
Speaking of Midsommar, I should probably say something about it, huh?

I enjoyed it, but the overall feel was just that it was a reimagining of Hereditary instead of a brand new thing, so I don't like it nearly as much. There's no gut punch because if you've seen the former, you know the progression of things and it's predictable. The way Hereditary was marketed, it being the director's big debut, and myself trying to avoid spoilers for it as much as possible, I did not expect to see the movie that I did (in a good way). I don't think that worked for Midsommar because the themes and progression are so similar that even avoiding everything, it still felt samey.

That being said, it's extremely well shot and the acting is all phenomenal and even if the foreshadowing hits you over the head constantly, it's rewarding.

Took my daughter to see Detective Pikachu yesterday at the second run budget theater. I was too old for Pokemon when first came out so I'm not super familiar with the stuff, but it was a fun little movie. My daughter loved it, but she isn't familiar with a lot of the first-gen Pokemon in the movie (she's got one of the newer 3DS games), so I have a feeling she's gonna start watching the cartoon on Netflix now.

I’m prolly the only one on this site that cares but I picked up and watched the new Criterion Collection Blu-ray of ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ tonight and the new 4K scan they used is a revelation compared to the 2002 (?) DVD that was released. First time on Blu. Awesome uncompressed DTS Master Audio and picture.

Highly recommended for the musical lovers out there. Criterion did good. Need to pick up a few more titles from B&N before the end of July (50% off Criterion Collection)

I need to pick this up. Hedwig is one of my favorite things ever. (Our local Seattle Hedwig, Nick Garrison, is really damn good, too. Whenever they put on the show we go to whatever dive bar they're performing it at) Saw John Cameron Mitchell give a Q&A after it screened at Seattle International Film Festival back in the day and I've made all of our friends watch it multiple times. Is the "Whether You Like It Or Not" documentary from the original DVD release on the Blu?

My wife refuses to see that one. She's a huge Bruce Lee fan and she saw the trailer and was like "Brad Pitt lands a punch on Bruce Lee?! Fuck that shit."
I saw some comments to that effect and agree except isn't Bruce supposed to be teaching him fight choreography for a scene where that would happen, not depicting that he would in an actual fight? Seems like Pitt is some sort of Steve McQueen type character.

This is also supposed to take place before Bruce's first leading role in a movie: Once Upon a Time...is 1970 and Big Boss is 1971. I put way too much thought into this btw.

You guys are putting way too much thought into this. Especially considering it was a trailer and could be taken out of context.

Oh for sure but thus is by far the movie I’m most excited about for this year. I’ll likely be going to a thur 4pm 70mm show solo cause the gf can’t get out of work early enough for it and the 8pm is sold out cause my dumbass slept on it.

35MM yes but I can’t find a 70MM show in town (only 1 of their theaters is capable)
Yeah, apparently only 5 theaters in the country are getting 70mm.

Alamo Drafthouse New Mission, San Francisco, CA
Arclight Cinemas Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA
Cineplex Varsity, Toronto, Canada
City Cinemas Village East, New York, NY
Music Box Theatre, Chicago, IL

35mm is a pretty good consolation prize.
