Wouldn’t this entire site work better as a Discord?

Thoughts?

The other forums I use (mostly 3D printing/makers) switched long ago. Same thing but posts are instantaneous and all in one app. Side conversations can still be had privately. Wouldn’t need to worry about server costs either.

You can also do the same threaded posts for BIFs with topics to click into inside of a category.

I acknowledge that I'm an old but I hate the flow of discord, especially in groups where there are lots of users. I prefer this format with individual posts.

And honestly I think it would just kill this group. I'm guessing most people here wouldn't make the switch.

I guess I'll say something.

Look, if folks want to go start a discord, no one's stopping you! Hell, I'll probably even join! But I don't think that it quite fully aligns with the goals/audience of this site.

There are things to like about discord, like the fact that it's a bit more real-time. There are things to dislike, like the fact that the search is horrific, that people usually miss interesting things because scrollback is miserable, that the data is owned by a weird company that is constantly trying to get people to buy "nitro reactions," that it's really tailored to video gamers, and shit like that, etc. etc.

DDT is a site where we have full control over the experience, we don't ask you for money (except when we try to sell you glassware you don't want), and the search function actually works. Also there's no stupid "audio chat feature" that no one old enough to still care about craft beer wants.
