The Tattoo Thread

Huge fan of the combination of flowers, finger waves and wind bars (those look like wind bars). Really love this.
This is the guy doing my piece:

Good as it looks now, I know it's going to be completely out of pocket when it's done up in full color

Got my first one 3 weeks ago. A herring. I'm very happy with it but mostly happy it finally stopped itching so bad. I did not expect the healing process to be more painful/annoying than the tattooing.
Love it.

Did use saniderm/tegaderm the first week after it's done? It's an absolute game changer for the healing process. No scabs, greatly decreased scaly/flaky phase, less time being itchy.

Not sure, this might be the Euro equivalent? I did go through almost 2 tubes of the stuff. I woke up twice in the middle of the night from the itching and scratched it for a couple seconds until I was conscious enough to stop. I just kept putting the stuff on it as an alternative to scratching.

Nah, saniderm is a wound covering originally made for burn victims, but it's now widely used for tattoos. I believe it's marketed as Tegaderm in Europe. You peel off paper backing, place it relatively tight (but not skintight - leave some room for flex and surface fluid) over the tattoo, and then peel off the clear backing and you're left with what you see below.

Goes on once the tattoo is done, or as soon as possible, and leave it on for 5-6 days. You can shower with it and add extra pieces if the edges start to peel up as long as the tattoo itself wasn't uncovered. All the excess ink is caught by the covering and the tattoo is kept sanitary. My guide is when the space between the saniderm and my skin starts to look dry/scaly then I remove the saniderm. This last demon mask tattoo on my leg was like 4.5 days with the covering on. Standard care after the sani/tega-derm comes off.

I will never not use sani/tega-derm. I've used it on all 6 of my tattoos.

Yeah Saniderm is a must (or whatever the equivalent is called) dramatic improvement over the old days. I have no idea why it took so long for that to be a thing for tattoos. My first exposure to it was after a moderately bad motorcycle wreck in maybe 1986 I had crazy road rash and saniderm sheets covered it for a while.

I think that's called second skin over here. The folks at my tattoo shop didn't recommend it, some bad experiences with it starting to peel off early and hurting like a mofo. But rubbing the ointment on it wasn't fun the first few days either. I'll keep it in mind if I get another one though. After this one I was immediately thinking of what the next one is going to be.
I'm considering going for old school encyclopedia style illustrations, could work well next to the herring.

Stuff like this.

For the next few weeks I got this sunscreen tattoo balm. You guys know if there's a meaningful difference between this and regular sunscreen?

I assume the main difference is going to be lack of any sort of unnecessary chemicals that aren’t good for fresh tattoos like fragrances and shit.

My artist recommended just a fragrance free sunscreen for kids but I’m high and can’t remember the brand atm

Meh I probably couldn't get the same brand anyway. This one smells like it's coconut based

MordorMongo has the right of it. If it's for tattoos it should be free of fragrances and other irritants.

I use Aquaphor healing ointment after the Saniderm comes off and then switch to another product once the skill stops peeling/flaking. I'm a fan of Hustle Butter.

My next tattoo is going to be a Futurama tattoo. To do this, I am watching the series and brainstorming at least one tattoo idea per episode (original run OG episodes only). The contenders will then be considered in a March Madness style bracket/elimination contest of doom until I decide on a singular winning idea that I shop to artists to implement.

Current avatar is on the list. This is inspired by the fact that I've long considered doing Hedonism Bot. However, I'm bored these days and want to have some fun with picking my next design.

Suggestions for the battle royale welcome!

Or if you're feeling like you wanna cry every time you look at the tattoo:
