US - West The Hawaii Thread (All Islands)

I've only been told it's not as great of a drive; but, if you're going Hana to Wailea, maybe makes sense. I believe there's only one route west to the Wailea area. Otherwise you end up going all the way back near the airport and then back down the western coast. That can be a real long drive especially with traffic through Kihei.

If you're staying in Paia, I'll make the obligatory Mama's Fish House recommendation. They book like six months out.

Can make food/drink recs around Wailea and Kihei if needed.
Mama's Fish House isn't nearly as busy now due to the fires and people still staying away. My parents were there in November and walked right in and got a seat. Doesn't hurt to check and make a reservation online, but Maui still isn't as busy as it used to be.

While my sister lives off the beaten path, I got my first real experience in that part of the island last trip after staying overnight in Kalapana. And it's not just Kehena beach as I saw a couple at Pohoiki on the new beach sans suits.

Anyone surfing at Pohoiki? The eruption changed the surf break there (and local fishermen are pissed that they have not yet rebuilt the boat ramp, though believe that's maybe in process now).

We were there on a Thursday morning, no surfers. There were some shore and spear fishermen plus some fishermen on the cliffs at MacKenzie Park. Got a good view of some whales breaching from that spot.

I did not see any progress on a new boat ramp. Looked nearly the same as it did in 2018 or 2019 when I was last there.

We officially booked our trip to Hawaii for our 20th anniversary this weekend. Would love to hear ideas about Oahu or the Big Island. Here's our rough itinerary.

When you're in Wailea, go to Big Beach in Makena. It's my favorite beach on the planet, and I lived in Santa Cruz for 5 years.

Got to Kauai late Friday night, staying at this absolutely ridiculous house right next to the parking lot for Queens Bath in Princeville.

There’s a third brewery on the island now, Napali Brewing, opened last summer in Kapa’a. I had their Helles with lunch on Saturday and thought it was solid. Their food was great, too.

Stopped at Kauai Beer Co and grabbed a growler fill of their Pink Boots IPA and will be heading down to Poipu tomorrow so I’ll probably pop into Kauai Island Brewing. I guess they do crowlers and cans now.

Safeway and Foodland all had the same Kohola, Ola, Lanikai and Maui beers available, nothing super special but you’re in Hawaii so it works. Glad to see Kohola still able to put out product with Kona’s help while they rebuilt.

Costco’s beer selection was terrible unless you want a 15-pack of one single Maui beer.

Ola beers are generally disappointing while their "smoothie" seltzers are generally quite good.
I love their Da Hazy Light and the Lager is really solid.

Lillikoi Lime Milkshake IPA is so much better than it has any right to be.

Kauai now has a fourth brewery: Mucho Aloha Brewhouse in Old Koloa Town. They do cans and/or crowlers so will be grabbing one today.

Also, both of Ola’s taprooms had really awesome draft only beers last summer.

I am a 4x weekly trivia winner at Ola. Think my wife and I took home a handsome $100 in gift cards total.

[Their trivia night is fun if you ever happen to be around then]

Last thing I could find is this from 2021:

The wine shop is called Tuesdays.

RIP Ron Jefferies. I certainly miss seeing those bombers w the cool artwork and adjuncts on the shelf. I always wondered what he was up to. Left Jolly Pumpkin to pursue a brewery in Hawaii? Hawaii wild ales?

I met Ron for the first time at Hilo Brewing last December. They are just making standard clean beers there. We got more into conversation about San Diego beer and how he came to own Hilo Brewing after plans to put in a brewpub by my parent's house fell through.

RIP to a legend.

Ron had really done a good job trying to steady the ship at Hilo Brewing. The canned beers they were sending to the other islands still sucked, but I was impressed with what I tired at the taproom in Hilo.

Planning a trip for the end of August. We normally go to Kauai but are thinking about Oahu since we haven’t been there since 2010 and it’s the only island the kid hasn’t been to. Would stay up on the North Shore and do a couple day trips down to the Honolulu area. I’ve got Hana Koa, Beer Lab, Inu Island Ales and Howzit on the list for breweries but otherwise it’s a blank slate. Open to anyone’s food/drink recs. Excited there’s an actual food scene now since there wasn’t much of one last time.

Found the rec list from 2021, that’s a good start! The only things I remember from 2010 are Leonard’s, Book Off and eating okonomiyaki.
