The Futbol Thread (Footy is a Terrible Word)

I think the thing that makes me most depressed about all of this is that neutrals have all decided to actively cheer for City, a petrostate sportswashing team created through cheating that has been proven guilty in the court.

Not me. City is my least favorite club in the Prem by far. Chelsea second. I was so bummed at today's result, but it's not over yet. Arsenal have a bit of an easier league run-in, but those two CL games against Atletico complicate things.

And if you ask them why, they regurgitate the same bullshit line: Arsenal has the worst fans.

Bitch, every club has the worst fans. That’s how groups of people work.

nah, I’m a United fan and Liverpool is not the team I hate most.. it’s City

I’m in Philly. no one knows more about this than me lol

Pissed that City equalized in extra extra time, but still pumped they dropped points.

If Ndiaye could finish, it would’ve been 5-3 easily.

Now I just need Arsenal to win two more UCL games and three more PL games.

Don't really care what the rules say but there's no way that friendly fire hand ball should be given as a penalty.
I would normally agree with you but also the Arsenal handball and the Bayern handball in Paris make me think otherwise. I want none of those called as handball but if you’re calling 2 of them handballs, they all are.

The other two you mention were at least hit by opposing players (and deflected onto the hand by the player whistled).

Just bonking your own teammate when you have possession and you're just trying to clear the ball is even less egregious than the White and Davies ones.

You can't really just make a blanket statement like this though. What if the friendly fire handball stopped it from going to an opponent? What if it redirected it away from the center of the field to the side of the field? In the scheme of things, handballs are subjective in a lot of ways so reviewing them is part of the game.

Don’t you think almost certainly awarding the other team a goal is a bit harsh for the offense of potentially preventing a turnover in possession down the field?

I’m not sure what the answer to this is, but I’m sure it involves human error and pissing people off no matter what.

Of course I can. Unless the player is laying flat on the ground and the clearance is so bad the player laying down put his hand up to keep it from going to an opponent in an attacking position ready to shoot, I'm quite comfortable that there are no  clearances that could could wind up as great, immediate goal-scoring opportunities for the opponent.

Who cares if it changes direction? Giving a penalty for what would equate to preventing a change of possession is stupid to me.

This is all justification for the idea that there should be more indirect free kicks in the box or penalties to be taken from the spot of the foul if outside of the 6yd box. A pen is .8 xG and that’s a huge gift for a lot of plays that amount to nothing near that. I think that there should be a lot fewer handball pens and I think the EPL has addressed this well.
