The 3D Printing Thread

IMG_1261.jpeg

Found this file for some ceiling fan light covers. I replaced my fan light with automated ones and they didn’t fit the cover years ago so I’ve been meaning to add something a little more stylish.

Still needs some tuning (this was not printed before/no reviews so it’s rough) but I like it. The first print experienced complete SPAGETTIFICATION when it tried to bridge that 2nd ring and I had to slow it down a lot the 2nd time around. Still need to print the next one slower for the overhangs but I can fix this one with a little sanding I think.

This thin stuff takes way longer to print then you’d think.

Mandolorian blaster for my cousin's son for Halloween.
Absolutely beautiful. Is that all Bambu brand filament?

I did an order with them this week and bought some Marble PLA. My coworkers now all want their own prints so I’m going to make a few “marble” busts next week so they’ll leave me alone. :p

I also bought a lot of electronics last week for lighting stuff and am going to be experimenting with doing some CYMK photos next week for Christmas gifts. I’ll post that when I get the filament in.

I also bought a workbench from Harbor Freight that a lot of people use for crafts to organize all my printers and tools I put together today:
I am doing work from home starting again next week (we complained a lot lol) so I also needed to get the printer off my desk.

Yep, the silver PLA silk and the other bronze color is PLA Metal.

Pain in the ass to build but sturdy for the price. No wobble.

I need to either put the AMS up on the shelf above or below or finish building the top mount but very happy to also have a little table to sand, glue, or clean up parts on. Mostly my shit is all over the office at home so I can organize it all in 1 place.

Also bought a filament dryer that’s coming tomorrow since some of my PETG is getting damp. Way too many fun little devices in this hobby.

Light box that I need to get a LED strip for.
Not sure if you've bought LED strips yet but the one I bought from Bambulab is really nice and not particularly expensive (it's a 5M long roll with adhesive backing and cuttable so good for multiple projects unless you're making something truly gigantic):

You can also buy additional connectors.

Maybe read better than me because I didn't realize for $1.92 you get 2 connectors so now I have a lifetime supply. 🤣🤣

Thanks, I haven't done that yet. I'll pick those up next time I put in a filament order.

Adding USB lighting was really intimidating to me (I suck at soldering) but those 2 items finally made it make sense to me (no really, I suck at soldering).

I'm very good soldering so I'm not worried about that part. I just wish I went something different from the color Wyze lighting I put in the riser.

If anyone is intrigued there's a Black Friday sale going on right now over at Bambu. Ranges from $40 savings on an A1 printer to $250 on an X1C printer. Also comes with a free gift (model kits that come with any electrical or metal components to finish the model) or random filament.

... ... ... I want dat new printer that's coming in Q1 sometime. I already told my wife not to act surprised when a giant box shows up and to not ask how much.

Doesn’t photograph as cool as it looks in real life. The picture actually has depth printed into it that creates extra dimension. Very cool… and this is from only 4 colors. My mom was elated.

My next big project is going to be a big-ish (I don’t think I can make it 6 feet tall but maybe?) Christmas tree for the office. I think I already know how to do it in my head and found a model that I can modify already.

This took 18 hours to print for my wife. 3D scan of the moon as an LED lamp for her desk.

That’s all one color besides the base (PLA Marble), just printed at about a bajillion different heights. I have a RTX4070 graphics card and it took it 15 mins to write the G-code (it usually takes 10 seconds).

Thanks for the heads up! I'll have to see if they have any unusual colors that Bambu doesn't have.

The cardboard spools are not good for the AMS but I can tape them up.
Ah! I forget that was a thing with the regular AMS. My AMS Lite will take anything. Doesn't fit? You just print an adapter.

I will say I've heard the Elegoo cardboard works better than a lot of other cardboard brands in the regular AMS. It's really thick cardboard. Haven't tried it myself though obviously.

how quickly do you burn through 5kg of filament?

how many hours of printing?
Depends on what you're printing and how large of a hotend you are using.

I'd say the most I've ever printed was 1KG per day making that 3 foot tall wolf (3kg of filament over the course of about 3 days continually printing close to 24/7 with 6 different prints filling almost the entire machine each time). It was a thicc boi though and I used a large nozzle for the entire thing (0.6mm).

Normally I use 0.4mm (which is the default that comes in the box) for just about everything which prints slower (but is more detailed). I also have an even smaller 0.2mm nozzle but every 0.2mm down in size effectively doubles your print time (but is even more detailed).

So...

1KG can print in 1 day at 0.6mm
2 days at 0.4mm
4 days at 0.2mm.

Roughly. More or less.

If you use the multi-color functions these units have it's gonna be waaaay longer. Like waaaaaaaaay longer, hahaha. Because it essentially has to pause about 2 minutes every time it switches colors to cut the old filament, purge the old color (melts it out of the hotend and flings it out of the machine), wipe the nozzle (it has a little brush on it that it knocks old filament off with), add new filament, and purge new filament out of hotend.

I've seen hour-long models in 1 color take 18 hours just by adding 4 colors if it's really detailed because it has to switch colors 800+ times.

Most projects are fractions of a spool. That moon I printed above was .25kg total for the moon and base for instance.
