The 3D Printing Thread

Assessing which tools I need but I got some of my first Prusa parts from eBay in the form of a completely unassembled MMU2 and MMU3. He did a good job separating spare parts (I only need the MMU3 parts) which is good but check this out! These are all 3D printed in Prague at Prusa’s print farm:

Anyways what is now a box of parts and boards will eventually be a 5 spool color changer that’s about twice as fast as the Bambu AMS.

It also retracts and doesn’t cut/“poop”, so significant filament savings.

I’m making an auto retracting spool buffer too so ignore the ugly default spool holders, buffer, and filament spools all over the desk. That’s already figured out.

I keep meaning to find this neighborhood but Georgetown is like 3 suburbs out from Austin.

Their layer lines suck. Someone invent fuzzy skin or wall ironing. Hehe.

Just that color on the bottom part, Elegoo Gold Silk. The whole thing was that color off the printer I just wanted some contrast.

Upper part is all painted with that same gold wax I used for the parts on the pyramid then buffed.

The product is called Rub & Buff and it was a thing I learned from Adam Savage via ILM on his maker YouTube channel.

Same substance they use to add shiny detail to spaceships in the movies. Previously your great grandma might have used it to color cabinet knobs gold which was its original purpose in the early 1900s.

This is The Little Mermaid statue located in the harbor in Copenhagen. Silver Silk PLA from Elegoo detailed with acrylics.

It’s not the most detailed scan I’ve ever seen but the thought of someone trying to do it via boat (they would have had to!) is hilarious to me. Also felt like painting. Might leave it like this but some dark green/browns at the bottom to represent algae might be fun (I was out of green).

This seems like a really cool development and I had some PolyCoins so I picked some up some in that Ryobi "tool" green (Red is there too for Milwaukee but my tools are almost all Ryobi).

HT-PLA-GF (High Temperature Polylactic Acid Glass Filled). Up to 150C of possible heat resistance. No enclosure needed. And it has colors.

(for reference regular PLA starts deforming at around ~55-60C so it can and will absolutely met in the sun),


HT-PLA as well... 130C resistance (keep in mind you'll need to anneal in an oven/filament dryer for a bit to get it that high):

Yeah if you're new to printing I highly suggest the A1 (256x256x256 build space) or A1 Mini (180x180x180). I have the A1 256 and it's a good printer and relatively cheap. Everything you've seen on here was made on that printer. It's actually the best PLA printer in their line (PLA doesn't like to be enclosed). I think I'm nearing 3000 hours on mine of continuous run time. I just have a fundamental issue with how closed their ecosystem is becoming. Most people wouldn't care. I like OrcaSlicer. 🤷‍♂️

Should also note that June is their anniversary month. There's usually a sale so you might want to wait a week.
 


My name is on the right hand side of this Prusa/Printed Solid stream from today and I have no idea why.

I must’ve gotten the award for talking shit on Reddit or something. It’s 3 hours long and I don’t have time to watch so hopefully I won something: hahah

Time for a hardware project.

Got sick of all the tariffs so I picked this up from their USA division. I’ll upgrade to Enclosed Core XY at a later date with another kit after they get those in stock.

Looks like a single head stripped version of the H2D to me. P1S XL or something? (it's got 340 in the z-axis from the pic).

I think the move is that you keep the A1 (they probably sell more of those than anything especially the mini one) as a bedslinger, eliminate the X1C, introduce a slightly higher priced P series and H2D is the flagship.

I think they understand they have too many 256x printers right now and people want bigger. Without all the extra crap inside the H2D you can actually print larger I'm sure.
