Tabletop Gaming

I did Jaws with my 9 year old son, and then bought Gloomhaven on Steam to solo. Highly suggested. Not sure what they charge on Steam now, but it was only $35 on Steam when I bought it. I have played through solo (controlling 2-3 characters per scenario) on multiple difficulty levels, and play once a week more or less with friends from HS that are now scattered around the country.

Got Jaws of the Lion on the table again this weekend. Finished the 5th tutorial scenario (pictured) and also finished the 6th. We're having a really good time with it, I just wish we had a dedicated table to keep it set up. The setup and breakdown are a fucking slog, man. But we're figuring out the cards, combos, strategies with spacing and timing; all that fun stuff. I'm playing Hatchet and she's Demolitionist. Had to really think about how to approach going after the Blood Tumor boss in this one, but we basically just went in guns-a-blazin' and managed to smash it up; I was fortunate to have to heavy-hitting cards left.

Anyone ever play Everdell? It's caught my eye at Target and I watched a few reviews, but would love to hear from y'all
It’s fun. Worker placement and resource management mostly. The art is top-tier. Pretty easy to grasp after maybe one play through. I’ve played a few games 2p and twice at 3p, which is probably where it shines best. I don’t know about the expansions, but they’re supposed to be good as well.

What I love about Everdell is at the beginning you look at the number of workers you have to place and the number of rounds you're going to play and you feel like not much is actually gonna get done. Then at the end of the game you actually have a shit ton going on.

Got Gloomhaven JotL back to the table again. Played one main story scenario and another that got accessed by the City Event cards (S21). In that one, I had to exhaust myself with Hatchet, but got just enough done so my Demolitionist wife could come in and clean up the last Chaos Demon. I feel like such a dork typing these words out, but fuck man, we always have fun.

Continuing along with Jaws of the Lion. This past weekend we beat scenarios 10 and 11. 11 was a fucking rush man, my ol girl got out of the sewer on her last card and I had made it out the turn prior. Man, the set-up and break down is a bitch for this game, but damn if 3-5 hours of playing doesn't just fly by. If we can ever get a dedicated table set up in the back bedroom, I might pull the trigger on the full game. I had no idea that we would enjoy this type of game so well, but by the end of a scenario, we're both typically standing up at the table and either high-fiving or lamenting with our hands on our heads.
Good times, man. Good times.

Picked up Marvel Dice Throne and took it camping with us this weekend. We got the box with Miles Morales Spiderman, Scarlet Witch, Thor and Loki.
8/10. Pretty easy to pick up and learn, and while I tend to shy away from dice/luck games, there are a lot of ways to mitigate the luck and manipulate the dice, so with just a few exceptions, we never really had and super-frustrating moments, and even those seemed pretty balanced. Where the game shined best for me, being a Marvel fan, was the characters and abilities are very well written to their characters and what you would expect from them. Spidey bounces around and can be hard to hit, while delivering little punches and webs that can accumulate damage; Thor is balanced and powerful, but can get got pretty good by all the crazy manipulation that Scarlett Witch is capable of and Loki has some very clever ways to attack and defend. Very thematic and made us want to get the other characters to play (Strange, Black Panther, Black Widow, Capt Marvel).

For the first time in a really long time, I have a weekend at home, obligation-free with my smoke show of a wife. I’m going to try to get her to play one of our longer games we haven’t hit in a while, namely Twighlight Struggle. Or maybe we’ll do a long session of Jaws of the Lion.

And we have an unopened War of the Ring, if I’m suuuuuper lucky.
