Assholes
I haven’t seen Sinners but have had the opportunity to catch Buddy Guy live twice in my life (once in 8th grade and once last summer). Man is a legend and the last going of his generation of blues musicians. I am glad Sinners has introduced him to more people. We created a double header today: Sinners and The Bride!
Sinners is set in 1932 and The Bride! in 1936, both are horror variants. They couldn't be further apart:
- Sinners is virtually an all-Black cast, The Bride! is virtually all white
- the cars in Sinners are substantially older / more rickety than TB!, underscoring the wealth divide
- Sinners combines horror, social commentary, leans heavily into Tarantino-style violence (especially the satisfying ending).
- The Bride! tries to go for social commentary, in particular giving The Bride a voice, but it's a pretty one-dimensional rage voice that makes the character 1D by association. "I would prefer not to" is cute but not deep
But also some similarities:
- I'll be damned if I understood more than 1 in 100 words of Michael B Jordan's dialogue in Sinners. I'm not sure if it was the audio mix or the speakers, but the dialogue in the beginning was difficult to follow, even for my wife. We've both seen it before.
- similarly, Jessie Buckley channeling Mary Shelley and vamping into a British accent was hard to follow. She definitely channeled Exorcist well, though
- Sinners pays homage to From Dusk Till Dawn, Crossroads, and the Robert Johnson myth
- TB! pays homage to Bonnie & Clyde, Exorcist, Joker, Fred Astaire movies ... I felt like it was too much, but fans of film history may feel otherwise
Misc:
- Christian Bale's accent started off British but kept slipping into a vague East Coast one, I'm not sure what that was
- I love the attention to detail with plantation dollars in Sinners
- god damn that music scene (THE one) was great to see in theaters again. And I loved the Irish music

I was a big fan of Johnny Lang in middle and high school, which is how I saw Buddy Guy the first time (laugh at me but after this my parents saw BB King at least twice) and Samantha Fish is doing a lot for modern blues as well. Not exactly the children of sharecroppers but the sound is there. We saw Christone Ingrams before the movie came out. Had a Leo pointing moment when I saw him in Buddy Guy's backing band in the movie. I think he's the main guy carrying the torch for the next generation.
Loved this show. FYI, season 2 starts this Friday. This time its a company retreat for a hot sauce company.Last night I finished watching Jury Duty on Prime. A 9 (I think) episode series with a bunch of D list actors and James Madden and a guy off the street who somehow gets roped into this production.
Which still doesn't make any sense. The production company is going to choose 1 person at random to send a fake jury duty notice to ? Can't they go on trial themselves for impersonation of the California judicial system ? BigFrank
It was pretty funny at times

That episode was grade A childish humor.Fuck yes. The first season was hilarious. The soaking part had me laughing so hard.
You ever watch Ash vs. Evil Dead? Are there any great horror streaming shows right now?
I’m watching Chucky… but that ended. I watched Creepshow… but that ended.
With how hot this stuff is at the box office I can’t believe nothing is going on. Am I missing something?
