SCIENCE!!! (and Technology)

Scientists created a brain to spine interface that has allowed a man with paralysis to naturally walk by creating a digital link between the brain and spinal cord using special implants in the brain and spine (with a computer strapped to their back). He can even apparently walk now without the brain link for smaller stretches using crutches as his body has re-learned how to walk.

Fascinating stuff.

Culmination of my “science fair year” was last week at the Austin Regional Science Fair. We’ve got 1 project going to the International science fair and 11 projects advancing to the State Fair. I will be going to both. State Fair is the end of March and International Fair will be mid May in Los Angeles. Much excite.

Also at some point last Thursday when I was wrangling 70+ kids around downtown Austin. One kid goes “You don’t get paid enough for this…”

Me…

Wut up… it’s your yearly science fair update.

Our school won the regional fair again… we had another school challenge us last year, but we smoked them this year. We’ve got 16 kids going to the state fair (which I think is our most ever) and one kid advancing to the international fair. Also my dedicated science fair class earned over $3,000 in scholarships.

The kid advancing to international fair did a bunch of AI stuff (that I don’t understand) and was able to 3D print a meniscus that in theory could be used for knee replacement surgeries. International Fair this year will be in Phoenix… in May…

Hell yeah dude. Way to encourage that big STEM energy! Sounds like you have a great group of students.

Just got back from International Science Fair in Phoenix. My student ended up getting 4th place in the world! He’s also a Sophomore so he’s got 2 more years to keep working.

Here’s the virtual display hall if we you want to see all the cool stuff these kids are doing…

These are the projects of high school students?! That's massively impressive. You must be very proud. Congrats.

Yea, it’s wild. I can usually understand the life science stuff, but anything engineering, AI, computing, etc. hurts my brain.

The winner this year was from Japan. I have no idea what he did because they pull all their stuff off the website hella quick. Dude was up there on stage just absolutely losing his mind.

International Science Fair always gives me a glimmer of hope that the kids are alright. The big guest speaker this year was the founder of MidJourney. Dude got absolutely roasted by the kids in the Q&A. They kept asking about how much pollution AI is causing… and he wouldn’t answer the question. Finally one kid from Denmark just shouts “YOU AREN’T ANSWERING MY QUESTION!”. Easily my favorite part of the fair.

I couldn't love this more. As a software engineer and avid outdoors enthusiast, I have major concerns about what I'm seeing in my industry and sometimes feel like I'm shouting into the void. This gives me hope.
