Got this in a box yesterday from an old trading partner. Boy, do I miss roasty stouts. Reminds me alot of bells expo stout in that sense. This one could benefit from some extra time in the barrel but otherwise the base is on point.

El Segundo is sort of an old-timer in the LA beer scene at this point. They rarely make a bad beer, though their stuff doesn't typically blow you away.

In other words, your review sounds about right.

Ah good to know. I recognized the brewery but had never had anything from them before. This would be a great year round BA stout.

Here we are, 9 years later and this era of Eclipse just swings the biggest of dicks.

I cant think of any other “series” of beer that excited me more 10 years ago than learning what the newest barrel treatments were gonna be and begging someone to trade me or be a proxy at the release party.

Some of those 2010s and 11s hold up so great. 09 too now that I think about it.

I have just shy of 3 cases that are mostly ‘10-12 with a sprinkling of younger and older.

I got some real gems in those boxes I probably should have drank instead of this brandy tonight but i have no guilt soloing this since I have another bottle. Seems selfish to slam a pappy myself or one of the elijah single barrel reserves without sharing.

Elijah is white wax? Those are always great. Red wax which I think is Four Roses seemed to hold up great too.
Though untappd tells me my favorites have been 2011 Buffalo Trace, 2011 Four Roses and 2009 EC. And masterpiece.

Yes white wax was Elijah. Some of those bottles have “reserve” written on with the same paint pen they used to write the year and bottle number with.

Todd Ashman told me it was a particularly special barrel that they did not want to blend in with the rest of the Elijah barrels so they bottled it separately with the intent of saving it for employees. But at one of the release parties it got accidentally mixed in with “normal” Elijah and a couple cases made it out the door.

Anyone who says stouts cant age beyond 4-5 years without going downhill either has a sense of taste polar opposite of mine or needs to invest in quality cellaring conditions.

Ive been the single owner of this bottle for the last decade. It has sat in my cellar up until last weekend when I put it in my fridge. This thing tastes like it has a coconut addition and is still plenty roasty/boozy to have been aged longer.
