2022 Beers of the Year

I don't think there was one of these last year but I enjoyed the 2020 Thread. I don't do much social media and don't follow much of anything in the beer world besides this forum so I like to see what else is out there. I'm not even sure if I ticked five new beers this year so just write down whatever you feel like.

New to you.
New this year.
Ticked it a millions times and it's still the best.

It's your list, do it however you like.
  1. Fox Farm Pebble. Little table beer that I could drink with every meal. In cans this year which was a game changer.
  2. Tree House Quaint. The haze factory continues to put out some nice lagers, including this Kellerbier.
  3. Zero Gravity Oktoberfest. Solid and reasonably priced. Probably my most ticked of the year.
  4. Brewery at Four Star Farms. Little local place in Western Massachusetts. Lots of breweries in the area are using their hops but they brew some pretty decent things of their own. I think this was our first post-pandemic brewery visit and it was just a perfect night to sit outside alongside their hop rows and drink some beers. No clue what we drank but just being back out in the world was nice.
  5. Celebration. Still delivers.

Willettized is probably my winner too. It gives me the happy feelings I used to have drinking BCBCS. I really need to find where they're hiding more of that beer in town this holiday weekend.

I mean I've had a ton of great local lagers too. Live Oak Gold is honestly probably my perpetual "Beer of the Year". Austin Beerworks Sputnik (another coffee stout, no barrel aging) is also excellent this year.

Love this idea. Not sure if these all came out in 2022 or not, but I had them all this year.

  • Holy Mountain Hand of Glory (2022 version) - I don't think I'd had it since b1 but it was tremendous
  • Side Project Beer:Barrel:Time Rye (2022 version) - I know it's a hypebeast and whatnot, but I just have a hard time imagining a rye-barrel, non-adjuncted stout can be better than this
  • Dogfish Head Rip Van Winkle Worldwide Stout - Took this to a share not knowing what to expect but we were all blown away by it - A true differentiation from the pack on a night where many a barrel-aged stout was shared
  • Timber Ales Willett Maris (black wax) - I've only had the pleasure of trying a couple of Timber beers so far, but they don't disappoint - This one was exquisite
  • Hill Farmstead Double Barrel Aaron - The finest spirit/wine barrel aged barleywine I've ever been lucky enough to try\
  • Freak Folk Colour Haze (pink) - Anyone who hasn't had a Freak Folk saison yet is truly missing out
  • Hill Farmstead Arthur: Foudre - Arthur will always be one of my favorite beers regardless of style, but Foudre takes it to another level
  • Revolution Brewing - Straight Jacket, Cafe Deth, Dark Mode, Ryeway to Heaven - They're all bangers

Honestly, nothing spectacular comes to mind. Draft Tilquin is probably the best beer I had this year. But that's a desert island beer for me and I just drink as much of it as I can whenever I have the chance.

Otherwise, I drank a fuck ton of Heater Allen Pils, Wayfinder Terrifica, and Pfriem pils. I'm not even sure I had a true go-to IPA this year.

And yeah, this year's Willettized is legit.

Loved Freak Folk Signet b3

At my wedding opened a Feb 2000 3F OG and Zenne b2, perfect

Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood City had a lambic event with a bunch of bottles of 2006 or whatever Iris. Perfect

Floodland new paths through old darkness

Hill cans get a nod, always the best

A&T, T^2 b1. Highlights of a lambic/saison heavy share in January. We also had Samuel b2, which was my first Samuel tick and loved it

I'm not even sure I had a true go-to IPA this year.
The state of IPA right now is fucking madness.

Stop it with the fucking hazies already.

By a country mile the best beer I had this year was Private Press - Take 1, Volume 1: Barrel #138. Electric Roads Batch 1 was already my favorite PP beer but this took it to new heights.

Otherwise I can't remember the other 346 new ticks this year.

In terms of a regular drinker I developed a real taste for Zero Gravity - Conehead. The occasional drops of fresh Heady and Focal in my local bottle shop was cool too. Agree Celebration was particularly solid this year too.

My beers of the year:

Wax Wings Harbors I (Weller and Apple Brandy) - Massive English barleywine that started in Weller barrels for a year and then transferred to Apple Brandy. Tons of Apple Brandy notes in this one. A very large beer. After my first sip I chuckled and said "That's really fuckin good."

Bell's Keller Bell's - a kellerbier in name, more like a hazy IPL in execution. Pungent hops, lager bite. Killer.

Waypost Italian Pils - It's an Italian Pils. I wish I had more of em.

Lost Abbey/Hill Farmstead A Small Still Voice - They called it a wild ale, but it really was a saison. Endlessly drinkable. Just an exquisite beer.

Barrel + Beam Pret Grisette - I was thrilled to see cans from this very solid brewery in the UP. I chose this one at random, but all of the 16oz can releases I got my grubby paws on were fantastic.

Bell's Two Hearted - Did you really think I wouldn't put this on the list?
