Retirement Ponderings

I cannot express enough rage. A single number used for decades without adjusting for inflation reflects stupidity of the highest order.

This is actually a post about the federal minimum wage.
The idea this can be boiled downed to a certain number, while well intentioned, is just silly. Location, lifestyle choices, family factors, all play a role. And good luck factoring what the cost of living will be 30 years in the future. But if it helps people save so they at least have something to draw on, I guess it’s something.

I agree with the utility of simple models, but it's too simple. Inflation should account for things like cost of housing and healthcare, and more things should be indexed to that. The fact that $75k was considered a great salary in 1990 and still is today is .... Really not good for long-term stability.

A few weeks ago, I hung out with an old friend from the beer scene. Not a "close friend", but someone that I hung out with at several bottle shares and we even did a couple cannon ball runs from So. Connecticut up to Hill (and back the same day)

He had retired a few years ago from being a college professor as he told me & others...and bought a sleeper van to drive across the country and drink beer. Connecticut to Florida, to California, etc. He is ticking lots of beer.

He sold the condo he was living in back when he was teaching full time. Now, he just cruises around full time in this van, mellowing out. He seems to be enjoying himself...he has yet to give up on his vagabond lifestyle.
