Random Food Thoughts

Is thermapen still the best instant read thermometer for cooking?

I was changing the battery in my workhorse this morning and a component off the circuit board fell off and now it is dead. Spring sale helps, but would like to make sure before plunking down a hundred on a thermometer.
We have a ThermPro+ we like. Sticks right to the fridge.

Yes. It's definitely worth it. The thermapop is well rated and way cheaper, but I've used it and I find it slower and flimsy.

Has anyone else ordered from martie.com?

Basically it is something between Imperfect Foods and discount grocery/bent and dent store.

We have made a half dozen orders over the last six or so months.

We like a deal when it comes to groceries, so it has been pretty fun.

However, if you find a deal that you can't pass up, you do have to act fast...as there are probably hundreds of other people who also think that.

$50 for free shipping, but we haven't found that to be an issue when there is something you really want. Always some random snacks to tick.

I did have someone tell me my family was weird for keeping room temperature butter on the counter in a butter dish - we always stuck it in the fridge before leaving town and I didn’t even know what pink butter was until I was like 35. We went through it too fast. No need to pre melt butter when you are not storing it rock hard freezing cold.

do people not leave butter on the counter anymore?

we did until this pair of cats decided that objects on the kitchen counter must be food, or contain food. they will eat and "free" good that got left out, or knock containers on the floor in hopes that they break open and there's food inside.

even butter

what's more normal: melting butter to pour on waffles/french toast/pancakes or smearing butter from a stick/tub?

cc: TalkBreakfast thread

Only time I applied melted butter to a carb like that was adding butter to buns at a fast food joint on the line.

In that case you have a little metal dish you keep on the flat top to throw sticks of butter into and there's a spinning metal piece with holes that you rub the buns on before throwing them on the flat top.
