Asia Tokyo

I used cash for everything in Japan. Even for buying the train and bus card.

My kiddo loved Hakone when he went because they did the fish bath where the fish eat your feet skin.

If you have a kid there is a museum in Odawara that is dedicated to Samari's. There is a kid part that's is short but fun. Then there is the castle that I liked a lot as it was a museum dedicated to its history and Samurais. Just be prepared for lots of steps. The beach isn't too... far I walked there with grandma and then we had beach beers.

Depending on how much time you want to spend on the train and getting around you might want to adjust your plans.

As sameasiteverwas mentioned there are services at the airport that will deliver your luggage to the hotel. I want this service in america. It's amazing.

That’s some great info. Wife and I talked about it and will probably do Tokyo for a few days then Kyoto for a few days a day or two somewhere else and then back to Tokyo.

We have 13 full days there so we want to see as much as we can but not just be on a train.

Will add Spice Post for places to eat.

Rough idea right now. May do only a day in Kanazawa and do my last day in Tokyo before I fly home.
I stayed here in Takayama on our last trip in 2022 and it was absolutely amazing:

While in Tokyo we normally stay in Yanaka and will be doing so again in April, but my wife and I have also stayed in Shimokitazawa and Sangenjaya which are really cool neighborhoods.

Also, the Shinkansen is very cool. But the JR Pass is no longer discounted for foreigners, it’s expensive and takes a good amount of time. Flights are faster and cheaper. You might want to look into taking some domestic flights in the country between cities and then supplement with a couple Shinkansen rides on shorter runs or use local train lines. Tokyo to Takayama is the Shinkansen to Nagano and then an absolutely gorgeous local line through the mountains. Some other routes might more sense to fly, though.

This coming trip we’re gonna fly from Tokyo to Nagasaki, then take the Shinkansen to Fukuoka and then fly back up to Haneda to catch our flight home.

any suggestions for baseball teams to check out while in Tokyo? Looking at the Tokyo Giants for when we are there but tickets are expensive. $200 for outfield seats.
The Yakult Swallows play at Meiji Jingu stadium in Tokyo and tickets are much more affordable and easy to get. I think we’re going to a Swallows-BayStars game there next month.

I’ve been to a Giants-Swallows game at Tokyo Dome and it was fine. Felt like the Metrodome. Meiji Jingu is a historic outdoor stadium that is going to be torn down soon. Go to a game there.

Or you could head to Yokohama and see the DeNA BayStars. The Yomiuri Giants are the Yankees of Japan and games are stupid expensive.

Funny you mention. I have been scouring the NPB info for this info. I bought “international” seats at the Hanshin Tigers game on 6/25. They were about $50 each. I wanted to get tickets for a Giants game around the same time, but it looks like they don’t go on sale till May 9. Just looked at a Swallows home game and again, I don’t think that homestand is on sale yet.

Yeah, they release small sections of games at a time before. It’s not like here when the whole season goes on sale immediately.

The NPB subreddit has all this info if you’re ever curious.

I have been reviewing that info...but get quite confused.

I think I'm going to rent a car and drive on my trip. Train tickets for a family of four end up seeming to cost more than car rental, tolls and gas. I am looking for airbnb's with free parking and don't plan on having the car while in Tokyo.

Where are you planning on going? I think the only place I’d rent a car would be Hokkaido or maybe super rural parts outside the big cities.

Going mid-June to Tokyo. Thinking I would rent a car to get to Osaka and Kyoto. One overnight in Shizuoka and one in a mountain town…haven’t decided.

Too much traffic?
Yeah, I wouldn’t want to drive in Kyoto or Osaka but people do it. And I know you’re thinking cost cutting but the Shinkansen is worthwhile experience. It’s a damn shame they got rid of the discounted JR Pass.

Yeah the price jump on the pass sucks. Right now the best deal I can see is getting the Hokuriku Arch Pass for 7 days. For the four of us it is close to $1000 (is a 17 year old a child in Japan for this ticket?). I can rent a car for $300. Part of the attraction is being able to stop wherever and explore random towns. Once we get to Osaka or Kyoto I plan to use local trains.

Kids 12 and up pay adult fare. Make sure you can fit all your bags in a rental car, Japanese cars are a lot smaller on average.

I don’t see a Japan thread so I thought I’d post here. Thoughts on how much time to spend in Osaka and Kyoto? We have two weeks in Japan and I’m doing probably five in Tokyo. Wondering if I should just do one or two day trips to Kyoto from Osaka or if it is worth staying there separately. Sounds like Osaka is better for nightlife.

Thinking of going to Kinosaki for onsen/ryokan experience.

Any input is welcome.

We are doing 4 nights in Kyoto probably spend some time in Osaka during those 4 days. Curious to what end up doing.

I think four nights between the two cities is right on. I’m renting a car and will have it at our lodgings. A day trip between the two offers an affordable way for us to experience the bullet train. Really want to visit Hiroshima, but four hour drive each way!

We thought about Hiroshima, but decided to pass.

We go to Takayama from Kyoto. Staying at the place Mr Gundam

70 days until our flight. Can’t wait.

I’ve only been to Osaka once back in 2014, I think my wife and I stayed three nights, but that was a trip where we didn’t go to Kyoto. One day we went out to Minoh to hike up to the falls and visit Minoh Brewing.

We’ve also averaged three to four nights in Kyoto. I was just talking my wife about it and her comment was “I get bored in Kyoto after three days.”

Also, you can never spend too much time time in Tokyo. It is a literal city state and there’s so much to experience.

Nice! We really enjoyed our time there. You can either use their shuttle service to go downtown or just walk. It’s not a bad walk at all but it’s definitely a fancy enough place that the staff were surprised we were ok walking.

I prefer to walk everywhere so glad to hear it’s close to downtown. So excited for that.

I think we are doing 8 days in Tokyo. Everyone I’ve spoken to said that a good amount but still not enough.
