Collectible Trading Cards

Yeah, that always stood out to me as a kid, but he had a good reason for it.

He was an absolutely amazing college player for Washington State as a pitcher and hitter. Every time we talk about all time favorite players my dad immediately goes to “Johnny O.”
May be a silly question, but how did you find out where to mail the cards?

There’s a Facebook group, I can share the link.

It’s all include a SASE and some players sign for free, others have a fee. Olerud was $5 a card and the money goes to his nonprofit organization for kids with developmental disabilities. I got my BIL a signed Kent Hrbek card for Xmas and he charged $5.

Got another! Funny how Olerud lives ten miles away from me but took the longest to get back. He’s probably my dad’s favorite baseball player ever so he gets a signed card for his birthday.
C3P0lerud! There was a story about Ricky Henderson talking to him in spring training and telling John he played with another guy who wore a helmet in field and Olerud was like "yeah that was me" was true but I believe it was confirmed to not be true.

Had an itch to rip some packs. Never had much luck, so I usually stick to buying singles. Had a good rip a couple days ago (nice Demidov rookie for you hockey people). Had an even better retail blaster rip today:

Celebrini Red Prism is a $4-$500 card on eBay. Nice little Friday lunch break.

Decided to try 1 box of Stadium Club, which I've heard has been less than stellar. I'd say this was an above average box.

Edit: Oh nevermind, this box is fantastic. Very next pack is a James Wood case hit.

I assume someone around here knows about Magic the Gathering stuff. My uncle has quite a collection that I'll most likely be tasked with liquidating sometime soon. I haven't got a good look at anything yet, so I'm not sure what the age range, condition, or if there's anything valuable in there.

Here's what I'm working with:

There are some other smaller sets and some random stacks of cards not pictured. Any ideas on the best way to go about valuing this collection and/or selling it?

Looks like there are a few older cards visible, but most of it seems to be in the early 2000s era. If you want to do it yourself I would separate the cards into their sets and go from there. If not I would take it to a shop that deals them and just ask them for an evaluation. Or you can just send them to my kid.

Im sure there's a game store in your area somewhere. That would probably be a good resource of info, condition opinions, and a general idea of value. Unless you simply want them gone asap though, I wouldn't sell to a store as they'll offer like 50-60%. Selling yourself you should expect 80-90% depending on demand for the specific cards.

First I'd separate out older expansions (these will be black bordered cards) from newer ones. Easiest way to do this is by looking at the card frame which changed around 2003; the bottom right corner of picture one has a good side by side of new frame (Skred) vs old frame (Raging Goblin and Culling the weak). For newer cards (and some older as this change was a few years before the frame change) set aside all cards with a gold expansion symbol as these are rare (there is another rarer tier but the color is close enough that you'll figure it out if you see one).

Pre-1998 there was no way to discern rarity from looking at a card. Best bet for those might be to identify the set via it's symbol (wikipedia should have a giant list of sets in chronological order alongside their symbols) and then go to a website that sells them and sort by value for cards from that set to know what to look out for. I'd also pay special attention for anything from their first three expansions (Arabian Nights, Antiquities, and Legends). I do see what looks to be a card from Antiquities in the first picture so that is promising. Those three sets had very small print runs compared to modern day sets and unless the company has changed it's reprint policy this means that even some of the common and uncommons can carry a decent price. If you do find a fair amount of those really old cards it might be worth it to sort through the older frame white boarder cards as there could be some Unlimited or Revised cards which can have some value.

I'll echo above though, finding someone local that can look at them up close and explain in more detail will be a better help. As for how to sell it...price out high value cards. Beyond that it depends how much effort you want to put in. Bulk sale is easiest but won't net much. You can try to parcel out 4x playset lots of mid value stuff but that would take a fair bit more effort, especially if you don't know what you're looking at.
