Goose and TAB at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Ma.
Having heard very little Goose, I was very pleasantly surprised. We missed the first 30 minutes of their set but they played for almost 2 hours so no big deal. Of what I saw, I liked a lot, with caveats. First, almost all of their composed material was very meh. The first song Trey came out for had a MGMT vibe and it was the only “song” part I liked while feeling old that newish bands today are being influenced by mid aughts indie bands. But none of the composes parts were bad either. Their jams are great but they’re not doing anything really original. Definitely some Phish-esque maneuvers in there. They tend to shred over these heavy, driving rhythms and that is something that I love. I’d definitely see them again but I probably won’t invest my time in learning their catalog.
TAB was TAB. It was sad not seeing Tony there though. The highlights of the TAB set were the Ghost and the jam to finish Steam, which had the Goose guys too. They just built this wall of sound and it was AWESOME.
Trey came out solo acoustic for the encore and did Theme. He said that Theme debuted 27 years ago at Lowell and made mention of how old the Goose guys were at that time. Then a Goose guitarist came out with an acoustic and they did Strange Design which also debuted in Lowell 27 years ago. Then everyone came out for a fun Blaze On.
The northeast was unseasonably hot, rainy and humid because of the hurricane and the arena was hot and sweaty. The floor was very crowded. We were in seats in the corner right next to the floor entrance for staff and I counted at least 10 people who had to be taken off the floor by EMS via wheelchair and 1 or 2 stretchers. Most appeared ok and probably just got overheated/dehydrated. I’ve never seen anything like that.
Any CTers hit up Mohegan?
