Let's All Go to the Movies

There are podcast apps that will cut out any pauses between people speaking to save time. I find that extra disconcerting for some reason, lol.

Pig: Nic Cage is looking for his stolen pig. Had no clue what to expect walking into this - instead of unhinged Cage in Mandy/Color Out of Space, Pig has a melancholy, very contemplative side of Cage which matched appropriately with the gloomy Portland backdrop. Way different vs those first two movies had a huge color spectrum and gratuitous violence. A strange, cool subversion of the revenge thriller that focuses more on the underlying emotional weight on these characters. Lots of restraint and an excellent performance by Cage.

True Romance in 4K

Yeah... I'm gonna end up importing this is Arrow doesn't announce a US release (I don't think they will).

I just wish the pound was still weak af.

Criterion finally announced a date for Uncut Gems for October. Nice slate of extras too.

Gunpowder Milkshake - 5/10

A young assassin working for a shadowy cabal, simply called The Firm, botches a job and must survive a 'kill call' put on her by her employers, a la John Wick 3. Right out of the gate I have to say this is possibly the worst movie title ever. But there's a lot to like, a lot to hate; which is what happens when you are obviously more concerned with leaving enough to write future sequels and building a franchise instead of telling a good, complete story. Keeping so much in its back pocket, aspects of the cool world it builds and the characters therein aren't properly explored even to the point where certain emotional beats have no effect. There was a Japanese slapstick yakuza movie feel around the edges that I wish it leaned into. The lead henchmen is decidedly Miike inspired. Some goofy fight scenes that really worked and cartoonish bloodshed made it really fun. Karen Gillan could be a legit action star if she played up her natural charisma instead of doing her mopey awkward thing.

I'd just watch Miike's First Love instead.

Possible sequel titles:
Bubblegum Cannonball
Shotgun Raisinbread
Cheesecake Handgrenade

On Netflix
