Daily Drinking Thread came into existence as a reaction of sorts: a group of folks with a vision could no longer find what they previously enjoyed at other forums. This vision started with beer discussions decades ago but morphed into an amalgamation of discussions about mead, sandwiches, travel, and so much more. At the heart of it all though was the simple question behind Daily Drinking Thread: what are you drinking right now?

One thing we've noticed in conversations leading up to the creation of DDT is a theme of community. As a result, DDT is centered around the dual values of Respect and Community. This means a civil space to share thoughts, respectful disagreement, common experiences, and mutual understanding. It also means personal vendettas and targeted harassment have no place here.

In addition to drinking in moderation, DDT is a space where some moderation must exist in other aspects, so as to maintain a safe atmosphere. The following are the basic principles of DDT moderation:
- Community members must be of legal drinking age in the country where they reside
- Pornography, Nudity, or otherwise Sexually Explicit content is prohibited
- Hate speech targeting individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or identification, age, etc is prohibited
- Topics of conversation designed to elicit anger or frustration ("toxic topics") are strongly discouraged and community members are asked to approach these with caution if at all
- Unauthorized disclosure of personally identifying information (as defined by the NIST) of others is prohibited
- Moderation will be public and transparent: Rather than deleting posts, their content will be deleted and replaced with a reason for deletion in all but the most extreme cases
- Bans will be the last resort: the community cannot grow if it is stunted, so most infractions of community trust will be solved without expulsion
- Moderation will be neutral: if a moderator has personal feelings toward a complaint or the community members involved, another moderator will step in to act in his or her stead
