OK folks, I'm cleaning up this thread, renaming it, locking it, moving it to announcements, and will update it if needed.
Here's where we're at:
The only really "missing" piece is 1(b) - "except animated gifs on desktop" - it remains impossible to copy and paste an animated gif directly into this editor on a desktop (it seems to work on mobile). To add an animated gif, you must use one of steps 2-4 above.
This is a known limitation in Froala, the editor technology that our forum, Xenforo, uses in this version. There is currently an open issue for this on github, and I've commented on it as well. If and when anything changes, I'll update this post.

- Copying and pasting images works - except animated gifs on desktop
- Attaching images directly works - including animated gifs
- Linking to images via the "Insert image" button (or Ctrl+P for some silly reason) works - including animated gifs
- Adding "media" from a ton of websites that directly host images via the "Media" button works - including but not limited to Flickr, Gfycat, Gifs.com, Giphy, Imgur, and Instagram
