Home Ownership

Is there really any fridge made today that doesn't suck? We've had three in 15 years, different makes and price levels....all suck. The only one that hasn't been an issue is the no frills 20 year old Kenmore that came with the house. It's in the garage and NEVER has issues.

When my wife and I bought our house last year it was new construction and we needed to get a new fridge/washer/dryer. We subscribed to Consumer Reports for one month to get reviews of appliances and it was staggering that all of the fridges at BEST had 3/5 stars.

im on year 10 of a ge profile that has been pretty boss. i had to replace the ice maker like 3 years in, and the switch that indicates that the water filter is in place shorted out, but that was like a $8 part to fix.

The whole water system piping is starting to deteriorate with our hard water here, but, the cost to repair that may be preventative. i'm not thrilled at the concept of possibly having to buy another one soon.

esp. with the performance of the ge profile tier appliances in our 3 year old house. i brought that fridge with me. already down a microwave and dishwasher. seems that line went to junk too.

Must be lucky, we’ve got a 7 year old Samsung 4 door fridge/freezer and it’s been solid as fuck thus far. Pumps out more ice than we use.

Appliance related. Samsung fridges fucking suck. Don't buy one ever. Specifically the ice maker. It's a known issue that they won't put under warranty. It's located in the upper fridge area, it is poorly sealed so humidity can enter, frost, turn to thick ice and brick it.

Last night while on Bourbon I had to run the force defrost 4x at 20mins each. Except the fridge beeps every 3-4 seconds. Maddening.

Get out the stabby knife.

And still ice I can't get to. It's where the cubes come out, so if I turn it on it may clear the mechanism. And I need space back in my freezer.

I'd be putting in a new water valve. That's a lot of ice to just be the POS Samsung.

It's been a year since we last defrosted it, if you read the complaints, this happens to everyone.

I tried 2 more defrost sessions and couldn't budge the ice in the mechanism, so going to have to use a hair dryer to melt it out.

You guys and your refrigerator talk must have given me some bad juju. Whirlpool Side-by-side GD5RHAXNB00, bought new in 2004. Opened the door today, light flickers like the bulb burned out, no display on the temp controller, and a buzzing sound coming from the bottom grate. I'm thinking the door switch is effed. Google tells me its a bad relay on the control board, of which they don't make anymore. Typical fix is to send out the board and have it repaired. According to everything else I've found so far, I've lost cooling function too.:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Look who's buying a new fridge!

My aunt had to buy a new one as well, delivery guys would only bring it to the front door.

So this has been fun.

Found a bunch of refurb parts on eBay. Saw one that had the exact same cooked circuit as mine. Saw it had a jumper. Made the same solder repair to mine. Voila, works! Kind of. Have lights and cooling on the fridge side, but after opening the door a couple times, the issue comes back. Unplugged and plugged back in, works again. Will limp along with this. Also bought a refurbished board from eBay.

Success!

I see you're already demonstrating your worth should it come down to choosing membership in a particular post-apocalyptic enclave.

So our microwave oven just started misbehaving and OceanOfMead said I probably shouldn't keep using it.

It seems to work normally when the door is closed, but when you open the door, the light turns on, the platter starts spinning, the microwavey sound starts going, and it feels kind of hot when I stick my hand in there.

So, anybody buy a new microwave recently and have any suggestions as to new ones? :)

I could look up our microwave but I think it's just whatever wirecutter recommended at the time. But mostly, don't use that microwave any more. Microwaves aren't as crazy as people say but that's a lot of wattage to be taking to your hand if the magnetron is somehow on.

Microwaves are awful, only reason we have one is the wife insists.

I have no odea why I would ever find a need to use one. She heats up tea she makes that she forgets do drink, that is all ours has ever been used for as far as I am aware.

I use it most mornings to microwave a pre-cut frozen english muffin for 15 seconds, to make it easier to pull apart and throw into the toaster to feed to OceanOfMead for breakfast.

Anyway, looks like I've ordered a new one from home depot for $90, and it will arrive on April 1 fools day.

Does anyone need a prank microwave that starts up in a horrifying way when you open the door?

no chance you could simply take it out the day before to thaw?

i mean this usage speaks to my opinion they serve no value in life.
