Hockey

I can't believe the Wild left Kahkonen exposed. One more year at $725k and only 24. They protected Talbot with 3 more years at $3.66mil and he's 34.

I so so so want Seattle to take Carey Price.
The hip or knee injury to Price may deter them, but I went through and did a mock draft with the final lists and took Driedger, Price, Kahkonen, and DeSmith as goalies. I don't actually expect them to take 4 that could all vie for a starting job, and I mostly took DeSmith because I didn't want any of the other Penguins players (and I think losing him would really fuck the Penguins unless they find a better option than Jarry during free-agency).

Its really gonna be interesting to see what this team ends up looking like.

So all of the Kraken’s selections are already being leaked by reputable reporters. I was going to watch the draft tonight, but I guess there’s no reason at this point.
Rumor is they're going to fly in the first selection via seaplane to the big fan party at Gasworks Park.

There will be more moves. Go look at who Vegas took in the expansion draft. Something like 50% of who they picked never played for them.
Could be very true.

This kind of feels different to me though. Feels like they're trying to build a team that Ron Francis himself would have wanted to play on 20 years ago instead of a good hockey team. We'll see where the pieces end up. But they're not taking bad players, they're just taking a bunch of good+ 3rd/4th liners instead of taking the obvious pieces to trade around later.

This was the other thing I am looking forward to tonight. Or is it tomorrow that we learn about trades since the rosters are still frozen? Either way, I'm definitely expecting a good bit of movement over the next 48-72 hours.

I was also reading yesterday about Francis trying to keep a bunch of cap space available for free agency and trades this summer, so I expect only a portion of what we see today to be dressing for the season opener.

Yeah, some of these leaked picks will probably make a lot more sense after we see what Seattle received as compensation to stay away from more attractive options.
I have to imagine Minnesota tossed out a solid offer for Seattle to pass on Khakonen for Soucy. Passing on Jake Bean would seem to require compensation, but I guess Francis drafted both him and Geekie, so presumably he knows what he's getting/passing on there.

Haha, a kraken choosing a Kraken player.

Glad to see The Angry Beaver get some love. That poor place barely survived the pandemic.

Yeah, I saw a couple and am now trying to avoid all news so I can watch it tonight.
Apparently it didn't matter. I thought this was gonna be on ESPN+ not ESPN2. Cutting the cable bit me in the ass on this and I guess Fridays draft too.

Seeing the selections has been interesting. Curious to learn about trades, or moreso compensation for some of those picks.

Wow. Seeing reports that there were no side deals? That makes a lot of these picks look like pure punts by Francis. Boy, this makes McPhee’s genius draft look that much better.

I was surprised they took Quenville from the Hawks, he has been a fringe NHL player both with the Hawks and when he was in NJ. I think he can fill a solid 4rd line role. Over all, I think the team will be Ok. They have some young talent that could blossom into stars, The D is big and on the tougher side, they have plenty of good character 3rd and 4th line guys, and they took some guys who will be in the AHL that have potential.
